NFL Draft Rumors: Why the Colts Are Leaning Toward Andrew Luck over RGIII
The suspense is gone. Actually, there really wasn't any to begin with.
After months before and after the college football season, The Indianapolis Colts have finally told Andrew Luck that, for sure, he will be the top overall pick in the NFL come Thursday.
Now, on with the show.
The two most highly decorated players on the board have been analyzed and scrutinized in a clear battle amongst writers to see which player could be taken first. As if there were any real choice. Personally, I did not see the Colts allowing Peyton Manning to walk so they could take Robert Griffin III over Andrew Luck when Luck was and is Manning's mirror image.
So why are the Colts smitten with the prototype? What makes him better? Why is Griffin not at the top of the list with all his athleticism?
Here are some reasons the Colts made the right move.
Luck Has Better Arm Strength
1 of 5While he does not have a cannon attached to his shoulder, Luck's arm is pretty darn good and he can make the intermediate and long throws with accuracy.
Griffin was accurate, but he also relied too much on his athleticism to make a pass work when he clearly could have set up short passes or found the open receiver on another read.
Luck has an arm that reminds many of Manning and some of John Elway. That is pretty high praise.
Is Griffin a Quarterback or an Athlete?
2 of 5There is no doubt he can play football from the quarterback position, but Griffin is a track star as well and that may be the variable that separates the two players.
Luck has been a quarterback all his life. Griffin has grown into the position. While I think Griffin is a better athlete and will do more to excite the masses, Luck is the better position player.
Luck Is Manning
3 of 5Like the Mannings—and I know I have said this before—Luck comes from football royalty.
Not like the Mannings, but his dad, Oliver, knows a thing or two about football and has instilled that in his boy.
That kind of edge is not taught on a football field, but it is the kind of thing that can set a player apart and make him special.
Durability
4 of 5Luck carries players on his back while he is being tackled and is sneaky fast, which may be the unknown of his talents.
Compared to Luck, RGIII plays with more recklessness and can run, pass, avoid tackles and exposes himself to injury every time he moves toward the goal line.
Who Can Win Now?
5 of 5This is a tossup, honestly because Washington may have better parts in place.
Griffin will create excitement in D.C. Luck will create drama and a winning atmosphere. The Colts are not a flashy franchise, while Dan Snyder is about splash and flash.
Luck best fits what Indianapolis is going to do with the football. Griffin is a great player, but he does not fit the Colts' system.
