UFC 145 Results: It's Time for Everyone to Board the Jon Jones Hype Train

Craig AmosJun 3, 2018

That guy who beat Andre Gusmao looked pretty good. We should keep our eye on him.

Man, that Jon Jones kid obliterated Stephan Bonnar. He tossed him around like nothing. Couldn't finish him, but he looked good again. He might just have a future in this sport.

That Jon Jones guy got his first UFC finish. He submitted Jake O'Brien. Big deal, right?

Jon Jones was disqualified for illegal elbows against Matt Hamill. He was dominating the fight, though. He handled the decision well, too. This kid looks promising. I'd love to see him fight a a big name.

Brandon Vera? That'll do, I guess. Jones knocked him out from the guard, but Vera never had a great ground game. I wonder what Jones' stand up is like.

Jones just dominated Matyushenko that same way he did Vera. This guy has great wrestling and wicked ground-and-pound. I wonder if he can strike.

He out wrestled Ryan Bader and out struck him, too. He is an amazing wrestler. His striking looks OK, too.

Wow. He just slaughtered Shogun. And he did it by out striking him. I guess his standup is pretty good after all. And the youngest champ in UFC history, you say? Yes, he is a very good fighter.

Rampage looked terrible against Jones. But then again, Rampage mentally checked out awhile ago.

Machida almost won Round 1. Still, Jones looked good picking up a submission win over a well-rounded guy like Machida. I wonder if he can go five rounds, though?

Yep. He can. He just beat Rashad Evans for five rounds. He didn't really look tired either.

I wonder if he can handle the power of Dan Henderson...?

Does all this sound familiar?

Since Jon Jones debuted in the UFC as a brash youngster MMA fans have sought to deconstruct his style and abilities.

Why? Because people don't like things they cannot understand, and it doesn't make sense that one fighter can be better at everything than everybody else.

But as Jones continues to knock off the best 205-pounders on the planet, he discredits each question we pose about his capabilities.

He can strike, take a punch, wrestle, submit people, finish fights, fight five rounds, fight emotionally, fight composed, handle adversity, handle his own hype, handle legends, handle different styles and handle criticism as regular as the tides.

Slowly but surely, the questions we can ask about Jones—the legitimate ones—are all being answered and we are left scratching our heads. Can it really be? Is the answer so simple? Is he simply that good?

As the questions melt away, there is only one thing left to do. Accept it. Jon Jones is simply that good.

He brutalized the best striker in the division, he has thwarted the takedowns of several of the division's top wrestlers and he has exhibited strengths without weakness.

We are out of questions. What more can we do? It is time.

While some boarded long ago, others are just now reluctantly scrambling for vacant seats on the Jon Jones hype train.

The good news is that you need not like him to reserve a place. Go on belittling his accomplishments, disagreeing with how he conducts himself and believing that someone out there holds his Kryptonite.

That's all fine, but no longer can anyone wonder if he is for real.

Begrudgingly or willingly, it's time that everyone boarded the Jon Jones hype train.
