UFC 145 Results: Rory MacDonald and 6 Welterweights Who Would Smash Nick Diaz
Rory MacDonald is the next big thing at welterweight. His win at UFC 145 over the MMA equivalent of a professional wrestling jobber in Che Mills didn't exactly wow those in the know, but he's still the real deal.
He's also one of a handful of top welterweights who would absolutely destroy the darling of MMA message boards and forums—Nick Diaz.
Diaz is a good fighter, but not at the highest echelon of the 170-pound weight class. These fighters would beat Diaz up or otherwise ragdoll him, sending him back to a lesser organization to beat up mid-level fighters and call out champs while hiding behind the safest barrier there is: contracts.
Rory MacDonald
1 of 6Rory MacDonald would annihilate Nick Diaz because he’s basically just a younger version of Georges St-Pierre, a fighter who Diaz would have nothing for despite what some people might say.
MacDonald would overpower Nick Diaz on the mat the same way he did to Diaz's brother Nate Diaz at UFC 129. The fight would practically be an exact replay.
MacDonald would pick Nick Diaz up, throw him down, and school him in grappling.
Jon Fitch
2 of 6Jon Fitch is a hated man because of his "boring" wrestling style, but it's this wrestling that would stymie any offense that Diaz is capable of.
Fitch has the wrestling to throw Diaz around like he was a child, and the submission defense to not get an arm taken off while doing it.
While his win over Diaz wouldn’t exactly be pretty, it would show that Diaz simply can’t compete at a high level in the modern UFC.
Johny Hendricks
3 of 6Johny Hendricks is a nightmare matchup for Nick Diaz.
He has the perfect blend of striking and wrestling to nullify (and even hurt) Diaz on the feet, and then take him down and smash him with ground-and-pound.
It would look like a potential Diaz vs. Fitch fight, except with a lot more punches thrown and the possibility of a finish by Hendricks.
Carlos Condit
4 of 6Carlos Condit is not "the natural born runner," and he's not a point-fighter. He has 26 finishes in 28 victories.
And despite what butt-hurt Nick Diaz fans say, Condit won their first fight and would definitely win a second. He proved just how overrated Diaz really was, and, quite frankly, Diaz wouldn’t have any answers in a rematch.
Condit's blend of striking, footwork and strategy is far too dynamic for Diaz, who just expects his opponents to stand there and get punched in the face repeatedly.
Jake Ellenberger
5 of 6Like with Johny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberger has enough striking, wrestling and submission defense to avoid Nick Diaz’s overrated striking, and even more overrated submission game, and earn a unanimous decision victory or a TKO via ground-and-pound.
Georges St-Pierre
6 of 6Georges St-Pierre is far too smart to play Diaz’s game. He wouldn't stand and trade with Diaz. Not by a long shot.
Instead, GSP would take Diaz down immediately and smother and control him on the ground the same way he's done to countless others. He'll simply neutralize Diaz's jiu-jitsu with his unbelievable wrestling and ground skills.
Diaz simply has no chance in this one; he would be outclassed.
