UFC 145 Results: Fighters Who Could Possibly Beat Jon Jones

Anthony GannonJun 7, 2018

It may seem a futile discussion at this point, but is there a light-heavyweight out there who can beat Jon Jones?

It's an important question, because so often when we get overly hyped up over a particular fighter, they go and lose. This is MMA, and everyone loses eventually. That incontrovertible fact must always be remembered.

Fighters will go on different runs at different times in their careers. Anderson Silva wasn't always the other-worldly force he has been since arriving in the UFC six years ago. He was tapped out twice in Pride by Daiju Takase and Ryo Chonan, the latter from a flying scissor heel hook that was beyond awesome.

The mighty Fedor's decade-long run of dominance was ended by a Fabricio Werdum triangle choke.

Even champions who are just beginning their great runs can get caught like Georges St. Pierre did against Matt Serra. Jones just happens to be so talented that he started his run very early on in his career.

So, let's take a quick look at who's left at 205:

Of Jones' already conquered top 10 foes—Ryan Bader, Shogun Rua, Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans—not one put forth a rematch-worthy performance, so it would take some time and a lack of new opponents to justify any one of them.

Dan Henderson is next in line and he has as good a shot as anyone, which is to say not very good or basically a puncher's chance.

Alexander Gustafsson is an exciting up and comer and he's even been compared to Jones. However, those are silly comparisons based on nothing more than the fact that they're both tall. Gustaffson is a great talent, but he has a long way to go before he can contend with Jones.

Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal, currently serving out a suspension for a failed drug test, is a great wrestler and a highly-touted prospect, but he lacks the overall game to seriously challenge Jones at this point. He could possibly develop into a challenger, but at 31 years old, he simply got into the game too late to stand much of a chance against such a phenomenal talent like Jones.

Gegard Mousasi is an interesting proposal. The 26-year-old Mousasi already has a wealth of experience under his belt. His striking is top notch and his submission game is very dangerous, but he isn't much of a wrestler and against Jones that's a huge issue.

Someone will beat Jones someday. It may be in a few months or it may be in a few years, but it will happen.

Aside from a perfectly placed shot on the jaw—which is a scenario that can befall any fighter and is not a particular opponent—there just isn't anyone we know of at 205 right now who can beat Jon Jones.
