UFC 145 Results: What We Learned from Mark Hominick vs. Eddie Yagin
When the UFC rolled into Atlanta for UFC 145, the only upset on people's minds was the possibility that Rashad Evans could walk out with as a two-time world champion. When heavy underdog Eddie Yagin brought the fight to former No. 1 contender Mark Hominick, fans around the world were stunned.
Here is what we learned from Mark Hominick vs Eddie Yagin...
What we'll remember about this fight
Everything. It will take something amazing to surpass this for Fight of the Night. Hominick's ability to survive was incredible. A man with lesser heart would have given up.
What we learned about Eddie Yagin
He is a UFC-caliber featherweight. While his striking was wild at several points, it was effective. Hominick is a great striker, but Yagin gave him fits.
His cardio is questionable. A badly broken nose may have been the culprit, but Yagin hit exhaustion as we entered the third round.
What we learned about Mark Hominick
That his gameplanning isn't great. Yagin's first bout exposed his weak ground game. Hominick has above average ground and pound and good submissions. Exchanging with a heavy handed fighter who he couldn't predict was a terrible decision and it cost him greatly.
Perhaps the loss of longtime coach and friend Shawn Tompkins affected him more than we realized.
What's next for Eddie Yagin
With a wildly swinging style, a bout with Leonard Garcia is inevitable.
What's next for Mark Hominick
With three losses in a row, it's not out of the realm of possibilities that Hominick will see a pink slip. However, Fight of the Night performances are generally treated with a bit more leniency. A fight with Josh Grispi or Cub Swanson would be fun.
