Liverpool's Top 10 Match Winners of All Time

Thomas AtzenhofferJun 1, 2018

Liverpool have won more trophies than any club in England.

However, they did not get there without players that would rise to the occasion.

Since the founding of the club there have been a multitude of match winners step out in front of the Liverpool faithful, and it with this article that we pay tribute to the Reds' greatest of all time.

HM: Jerzy Dudek

The only goalkeeper to make this list, Jerzy Dudek was the man of the hour that kept AC Milan at bay in the 2005 Champions League final that would become known as the "Miracle of Istanbul."

HM: Dirk Kuyt

2 of 14

Liverpool's flying Dutchman, Dirk Kuyt has a history of being clutch. Just look at his super sub goal in extra time of the 2012 Carling Cup final that should have sealed the deal if the defense had not gotten sloppy and allowed a shootout.

Kuyt also is the one that filled the void of Fernando Torres when he left for Chelsea.

However, his heroics at time are lost on the minds of some that dismiss him as merely a work horse.

HM: Fernando Torres and Others

Fernando Torres. Although "El Nino" has gone, his time on Merseyside will forever be remembered as a great love for the player, but utter pain and betrayal from his departure.

He was a thorn in the side of big rivals Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea as well as being one of those that helped pick Real Madrid apart on a memorable Anfield European night.

Torres' 81 goals in 142 games could have been just the start to a much longer career in red.

Gordon Hodgson

4 of 14

Liverpool legend Gordon Hodgson was one of the first major heroes to the Red side of Merseyside.

While every Everton fan raved about the exploits of Dixie Dean, Hodgson would go on to score 241 goals for the Reds with 377 appearances between 1926 and 1937.

John Barnes

5 of 14

John Barnes broke into the Liverpool squad in the 1980's.

His class and skill saw him break not only racial barriers in the English first division, but across England.

Barnes was an offensive catalyst for the Reds and while he scored 108 goals in 407 appearances he created just as many others or more.

Forever will the No. 10 shirt be revered as that of the legendary John Barnes.

Michael Owen

6 of 14

Although the sight of Michael Owen in a Manchester United shirt will never sit well with anyone that adored him from the Kop, or afar, his natural goal scoring ability was magic to watch for Liverpool.

Owen was one of the chief weapons of the Reds' unique 2001 treble winning season in which they claimed a domestic cup double and the UEFA Cup.

All in all Owen scored 158 goals in 297 appearances before leaving for Real Madrid in 2004.

Robbie Fowler

7 of 14

The Liverpool faithful know him as "God," all the rest of the world football community know him as Robbie Fowler.

Fowler will forever be one of the greatest No.9's to pull on a Reds kit and his 369 appearances with 183 goals will have him enshrined for eternity at Anfield.

His natural goal scoring ability saw him win countless matches for the Reds.

Kevin Keegan

8 of 14

The man that made the No. 7 great for Liverpool is the one and only "King Kevin."

Kevin Keegan only was on Merseyside for six years between 1971 and 1977 but his 323 appearances and century of goals were enough to help him provide two UEFA Cups, three league titles, a European Cup and an FA Cup before leaving for Germany and being named to back to back Ballon d'Or honors.

Steven Gerrard

9 of 14

Steven Gerrard is that "once in a generation" player for Liverpool.

The ability to lift the club in the time of need has rarely been displayed at a higher level than that of the Reds' "Captain Fantastic."

Gerrard is a goal shy of the 150 milestone for the Reds in his 583 appearances but so many of those have been the strike to take his club to glory that he will forever be revered as one of the best game winners in Liverpool's history.

Roger Hunt

10 of 14

Roger Hunt came to Liverpool in 1959. At the time the Reds were struggling in the second division, a shadow of their dreams of greatness.

Bill Shankly entrusted Hunt to be the man up front to help deliver the Reds out of the second tier of the England football pyramid and he would help do just that in 1962.

The Kop idol would also lead the way to the 1964 and 1966 first division titles. He also played his part in the 1965 FA Cup as well as the 1964, 1965 and 1966 Community Shields.

Billy Liddell

11 of 14

Kenny Dalglish certainly is the most famous Scottish player in the Reds' history, but Billy Liddell is the close second.

To generations before Dalglish, Liddell is for many the greatest player to ever pull on the Liverpool shirt.

His 228 goal haul in 534 career appearances saw its greatest moment of magic when he helped the club to the 1946-47 league title.

However, his great career in Red will always be overshadowed by the clubs relegation in 1954 that saw them languish away until the year after Liddell's departure in 1961.

Ian Rush

12 of 14

The all-time leading goal scorer for Liverpool at 346, Welsh-born Ian Rush is without a doubt the Reds' greatest match winner of all time.

He was the first British player to win the European Golden Boot in 1983-84 with 47 goals in the Reds' record year.

This was a perfect accompaniment to an unprecedented treble of the league title, European Cup and Milk Cup, not to mention double Player of the Year recognition.

No one has ever shaken the Kop as many times as Rush.

Kenny Dalglish

13 of 14

The legendary "King Kenny" has a wing of Anfield reserved for himself in eternity.

Kenny Dalglish is perhaps the greatest Scottish player to ever pull on a Liverpool jersey and his boyish excitement from scoring a goal still courses through his veins even today during his second tenure as the club's manager.

His 172 goals in 512 appearances are but a footnote to his ability to provide the build up and or assisting goal opportunity on a plate.

Dalglish was truly a maestro of the finest form as a second striker that every forward dreamed of having playing in their support.
