UFC 145 Results: Eddie Yagin Shocks Mark Hominick in Massive Upset

Andrew SaundersApr 21, 2012

I owe Eddie Yagin an apology.

In a shocking upset, the Filipino featherweight stunned former UFC featherweight championship contender Mark Hominick.

Eddie Yagin surprised many Saturday night on the main card of UFC 145. Vicious strikes halfway through the first round rocked Hominick with a right uppercut/left hook combo that had many believing that the fight was over.

Yagin followed Hominick to the ground, where the Canadian tied him up and had a few moments to recover. When they returned to their feet, the bout was much closer, but Yagin certainly won the first round.

Hominick began Round 2 with two swollen eye sockets. Two minutes into the round, Yagin scored another knockdown and followed it up with several heavy shots. Once again, Hominick avoided the stoppage when it seemed inevitable.

The two returned to their feet where Yagin continued to search for a series of spinning back fists and wheel kicks. Hominick picked up the pace as the round came to a close and Yagin bloody from the eyes down. I had to give the round to Yagin for nearly finishing, but Hominick did considerable damage too.

The third round kicked off with both men swinging. Hominick used crisp, technical boxing to an advantage and changed levels with nice body punches. Yagin continues to look for big, telegraphed strikes and Hominick took control. Yagin was exhausted but trudged forward with heavy strikes. In the last 90 seconds of the fight, Hominick hurt Yagin with a combo up against the cage, but Yagin did not go down. The bout ended with both men throwing heavy leather as the fight went to the scorecards.

Judges score the bout 29-28 Yagin, 29-28 Hominick, and 29-28 Yagin to give the Hawaiian the split-decision victory.

Yagin's victory saved his job after a lackluster performance in his UFC debut last September. With the victory he improves to 16-5-1, and the victory over such a highly regarded fighter raises questions about where he belongs in the division.

The loss is tragic for the career of Hominick, who now finds himself amid a three-fight skid. Since the death of his trainer Shawn Tompkins, Hominick has lost two straight against opponents where he was a heavy favorite.
