Jon Jones or Rashad Evans: Who Needs a Win More?

Jordy McElroyJun 1, 2018

After a year of trash talk and build up, Jon Jones and Rashad Evans are set to face off in one of the biggest grudge matches in MMA history.

With all that's been said, there is plenty of humble pie to go around. This fight is just as much about bragging rights as it is about winning a UFC title.

Who needs a win more? Jones or Evans?

A loss for Jones would definitely be a tough pill to swallow, but for Evans, it could be career-defining.

Some believe that a fighter must defend his title at least once to truly be considered a champion. Evans was never able to accomplish that during his reign as champion. After taking the title from Forrest Griffin, he was immediately ousted by Lyoto Machida. This bout against Jones is a major opportunity for Evans to make his mark as a UFC champion and dethrone his most bitter rival in doing so.

The interesting part about the Jones and Evans feud is that neither fighter is in the wrong. Jones just wants to be the best in the world. Why should training under the same roof deny him that? Not every fighter is willing to live in the shadow of their teammate as Mauricio Rua did for Wanderlei Silva so many years in Pride.

As for Evans, he has every right to be upset about Greg Jackson bringing in Jones to train. Evans was one of the original fighters who helped build Jackson's MMA. He truly believed he was Jackson's guy in the light heavyweight division.

Why bring another surefire light heavyweight contender in to upset the balance?

This bout is more personal for Evans than Jones. Beneath all the trash talk and bravado, Evans' feelings are hurt. He feels betrayed by people he once looked to as his family, and those feelings don't just disappear.

Evans has to win this fight to prove to himself that Jackson was wrong. He wants to pay Jackson back for overlooking him. Jackson sought out Jones when he already had a world champion sitting under his nose the whole time.

If Evans loses, what will that do to his psyche?

A loss would in a way justify Jackson's actions in Evans' mind. Jackson went for the next big thing and cashed in on a golden ticket. Evans would have to sleep at night knowing the man he lost to has everything that used to belong to him.

This is the kind of fight that can make or break an entire career, and there can only be one winner.
