Anthony Davis: How Kentucky Star Would Impact Each Potential Lottery Winner
Anthony Davis is without a doubt the crown jewel of the 2012 NBA draft class. The kid is simply good enough to come in and change the culture of a franchise from day one.
That’s the reason why every GM is obsessing over their chances to win the lottery and salivating at the chance to select this Kentucky superstar No. 1 overall.
Let’s take a look at how the seven teams with the best chance of landing the pick would use him and their odds of actually winning the sweepstakes.
Charlotte Bobcats (Chance of Winning Lottery: 25 Percent)
Michael Jordan’s team is comprised of one of the worst rosters ever assembled. With one Ping-Pong ball bouncing their way, all of that could change.
Pairing Davis with emerging defensive stud Bismack Biyombo in the frontcourt would make this team extremely hard to score on. They’d help protect the rim while the lesser defenders on the perimeter let their man past.
Davis isn’t going to make them playoff contenders in 2013, but he puts them well on their way.
Washington Wizards (Chance of Winning Lottery: 19.9 Percent)
John Calipari alumni John Wall and Davis would make one of the most fearsome tandems in the league.
The UK stars would play great transition basketball, play great defense and actually make the Wizards competitive again for once.
There is a small chance that Washington sneaks into the playoffs next season if they land Davis.
New Orleans Hornets (Chance of Winning Lottery: 15.6 Percent)
The Hornets got a new owner and would have a great chance at a fresh start by landing the No. 1 selection and drafting the Unibrow.
They would be able to cut Emeka Okafor, who is owed a ridiculous $13.5 million in 2012-13. It’s unlikely that their talented big Chris Kaman returns, although he might want to join forces with Davis to make a formidable frontcourt tandem.
Regardless, Eric Gordon and Davis would be building blocks for a perennial Finals contender down in the Big Easy.
Sacramento Kings (Chance of Winning Lottery: 11.9 Percent)
This is a tough fit for Davis, as DeMarcus “D-Boogie” Cousins is currently occupying the same position that he plays and has just as much upside.
It’s unlikely that Sacramento would want to cause drama amongst their team and would either trade the pick or move Cousins before the season.
Cleveland Cavaliers (Chance of Winning Lottery: 8.8 Percent)
It wouldn’t be such a bad thing for the Cavs to win two lotteries in a row to rebuild following the departure of LeBron James.
Kyrie Irving and Davis would form the nucleus of a team that would be ready to return to the playoffs sooner than later. Davis is a nice complement to Anderson Varejao down in the low post and the two could play off each others' strengths.
New Jersey Nets (Chance of Winning Lottery: 5.4 Percent)
The Nets are praying that they win the No. 1 pick, or at least the 2 or 3. If they don’t, this pick becomes property of the Portland Trail Blazers.
Davis is a perfect fit with this team and it could honestly change their fortunes forever.
Deron Williams might leave town if they don’t get this pick. That would leave them with Brook Lopez as the “star” for their first season in Brooklyn. Lopez is a mediocre shot blocker and the worst rebounding big in the league.
If they get Davis, perhaps D-Will stays and Davis’ talents hide Lopez’s faults. It’s a win-win combination for everyone.
Toronto Raptors (Chance of Winning Lottery: 5.3 Percent)
The Raptors would love to use Davis as a 3 or 4 in their system, although it is a long shot, they will get that chance. If he lands here, expect them to try something unconventional at the forward spots and hopefully have it work out.
