UFC 145 Results: Matt Brown Defeats Stephen Thompson
In a surprise upset at UFC 145 on Saturday night, journeyman welterweight Matt Brown defeated Stephen Thompson.
Brown has had an inconsistent career as a mixed martial artist, to say the least. He came into this fight with a 13-11 career record. To his credit, he has never been knocked out but he doesn't have a well-developed ground game, which has led to nine submission defeats.
None of that mattered on this night, as Brown was able to win consecutive fights in UFC for the first time since defeating Pete Sell and James Wilks in 2009.
This victory has at least bought Brown a little bit of job security. Coming into the fight he had lost four of his last five fights. Usually that kind of record would get you a first-class ticket out of UFC, but the fact that most of Brown's fights are exciting helps him out.
For Thompson, this loss is devastating. He is a world-class kickboxer with a career mark of 63-0 in that sport. He made the transition to mixed martial arts in 2010 and put together six straight wins to start his career, including a vicious knockout of Dan Stittgen in his UFC debut in February.
Thompson looked like a rising star in the welterweight division. He may not have gotten to championship status, because the division is loaded with talent right now, but he could have been a consistent main card performer.
Regardless of what happens to Thompson, Brown did exactly what he needed to in order to walk away from this show with a nice victory.
