Nebraska Football: Fans Need to Step Up to Take Advantage of Non-Revenue Option
After their spring game was rained out on Saturday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers elected not to go the Sunday route with the contest. Instead of trying to get fans in and out, while coordinating with their players' family and academic schedules, Bo Pelini just decided to say no on the spring game for 2012.
Tom Osborne and the Huskers have tried to make it right though; starting with giving away concessions at the game and they have another game plan for Nebraska fans who purchased the tickets to the exhibition.
Those tickets are redeemable for one of two things; credit towards a Nebraska's 2013 spring contest ticket OR a ticket to a home baseball or softball game this year.
For the football-crazed folks of Husker Nation that could surely mean a head start on their 2013 plans. They already have a ticket to the 2013 game, why not just start planning on enjoying watching Taylor Martinez prep for his senior campaign and be done with it.
However, what I've been hoping since reading the options is that folks take advantage of their excuse to go watch a little non-revenue collegiate athletics.
Nebraska baseball was a very respectable 28th in the nation a season ago in attendance. They have a baseball team that's third in the Big Ten, behind Purdue and Minnesota, and has 10 home games left. Those 10 home games remaining include three-game series' against both Purdue and Minnesota; an opportunity for the Huskers to close the gap on the Big Ten regular-season title.
On the softball side, Nebraska has six home games left, four home dates as they have double headers to open series' against Michigan State and Wisconsin. Michigan is tops right now but Nebraska can inch its way closer to the top with some key victories, especially over a Wisconsin team they're locked into a tie for third with.
The point here is that while football is great—it's what we do here at Your Best 11—it's always great to remember those other sports out there.
I'm not much for college basketball, but a good baseball game at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill is one of my favorite things to do in the spring.
For folks who don't generally go to Hawks Field in Lincoln, this gives them a free excuse to take themselves, their kids or their friends to sample more of the collegiate-athletic landscape.
The thousands of folks that were gearing up to go watch the football team practice, would most certainly be appreciated by the baseball/softball teams.
