Miami Hurricanes Football: Latest News, Injuries and Updates

Bleacher ReportJun 7, 2018

While the spring season is officially over for the Miami Hurricanes, there are still plenty of things to look forward to heading into the regular season.

There are many unanswered questions surrounding the Hurricanes, especially at quarterback, a position that has been so inconsistent since Brock Berlin.

The summer is fast approaching and before we know it fall practice will begin.  Here is the latest down in Coral Gables.

The Spring Season Is Over

1 of 5

The Hurricanes concluded their spring practice session with the annual spring game at Sun Life Stadium.  The orange team (compromised of the starting offensive unit) beat the green team (starting defensive unit) 7-6.

The score either says the offense is way behind or the defense is way ahead, either way it is probably not what the coaches wanted to see.

Starting quarterback Ryan Williams had a terrific first spring scrimmage, but has struggled in the second scrimmage and more recently in the spring game when he threw two interceptions.

Mike James scored the Hurricanes only touchdown when he ran it in from five yards out.

The defensive units combined for four interceptions, two sacks, a forced fumble and several pass deflections.

Stephen Morris Is Throwing Again

2 of 5

After successfully going through offseason back surgery, Stephen Morris is back throwing the ball again.  In fact, head coach Al Golden stated that if it were a game last Saturday instead of just a spring game, Morris would have been able to play.

Although Ryan Williams has had a pretty solid spring season, Morris is the quarterback that seems to have a better knowledge of the system.  The only concern coaches and fans have about Morris are his interceptions.

The junior quarterback has thrown 190 passes in his career, completing 108 of them for 1,523 yards, seven touchdowns and 11 interceptions.  The interceptions are what scares people, so it may be a blessing that Morris was out for the spring.  It gives Williams and freshmen Gray Crow and Preston Dewey some much-needed reps.

Either way, Morris is back now and expected to be at full strength this fall.

The Cornerbacks Are Surprisingly Impressive

3 of 5

One of the biggest problems last year were the poor performance of the cornerbacks, but the spring showed some very promising game play.

Brandon McGee, who has had a less-than-stellar career, has multiple interceptions this fall.  Thomas Finnie, McGee's backup, also has had a few including one in the spring game.

Fort Scott Community College transfer Ladrius Gunter has also provided some excitement in the backfield and even has been listed as the starter alongside McGee.  Gunter lead all Hurricanes in the spring game with seven tackles.

I completely understand that the quarterback situation may have caused a few of these interceptions, but I also believe that the cornerbacks are finally getting coached correctly and should be improved this year.

I certainly cannot wait until 5-Star recruit Tracy Howard comes in this fall and adds more depth to an increasingly good cornerback position.

Miami Snags 4-Star Tight End

4 of 5

The Hurricanes received some great news on April 4 when they received word that Louisiana's Standish Dobard was choosing Miami as his college of choice.

The 4-Star commit has great size standing 6'5'' and weighing in at 235 pounds.  He has terrific hands and recently ran a 4.7 40-yard dash at an Orlando Under Armour camp earlier this year.

Last season Dobard caught 27 passes for 339 yards and four touchdowns for Edna Karr High School.

Injuries

5 of 5

There were plenty of injuries that limited Hurricanes from participating in the spring.  The good news is that none of them seem to be season-ending injuries.

Corey King, Stephen Morris and Nantambu Fentress are still recovering from offseason injuries and did not participate in the spring.

C.J. Holton, Jon Felciano and Shayon Green were injured after the first scrimmage and never returned all spring.

Ramon Buchanan is the last Hurricane that never participated at all this spring season as he is still rehabbing a knee injury from last season.

All Hurricanes are expected to participate this fall.
