The Biggest Winners and Losers After Saturday's Premier League Action
As the FA Cup semifinals take place this weekend, we've only had four Premier League matches to enjoy. But that hasn't lessened the action.
There were goals galore at Carrow Road when Norwich hosted title-chasing Manchester City, with an unlikely hero stealing the show.
It was a bad day for the teams at the foot of the table. Blackburn deserved to get beaten by Swansea, and QPR lost out to West Brom.
In today's other game, Wolves improved on their recent form to gain a point against Sunderland, but they need far more than that at this point of the season.
So, who were the biggest winners and losers of the day? Disagree with my picks? Comment below.
Biggest Winner: Carlos Tevez
1 of 4After Manchester United's slip-up midweek, Manchester City needed a big performance today to keep the pressure on their rivals.
It was former United player Carlos Tevez who came up big when needed.
After one of the most controversial seasons of any player, Tevez stormed back into the starting lineup to grab three goals in Manchester City's 6-1 demolition of Norwich City.
The first was thanks to some poor goalkeeping from Norwich's John Ruddy. Tevez let fly with a speculative effort from around 25 yards, which Ruddy inexplicably let squeeze in between him and his left-hand post.
He then set up fellow countryman Sergio Aguero with a well-timed backheel that Aguero hit sweetly into the Norwich net.
Tevez's second came late in the game when he was quickest to react to a parried Yaya Toure shot. He then finished off a great day's work when he stole onto a poor backpass from Ryan Bennett to run around Runny and seal his hat trick.
It was a sweet moment of redemption for the Argentinian.
2nd Biggest Winner: Roy Hodgson
2 of 4With four wins in their last five games, Roy Hodgson's West Bromwich Albion are ending the season strong.
It was Graham Dorrans who scored the telling goal, fizzing a shot from around 30 yards out that Paddy Kenny should have got a stronger hand on.
Hodgson showed good control of his players. As soon as trouble looked like it was brewing when Dorrans was booked for a poor tackle, he was replaced by Hodgson—a lesson that Roberto Mancini could have done with last week.
The FA will no doubt be watching, and with the news that Hodgson is looking to insert a release clause should England come calling, his stock can only be rising in their eyes.
Biggest Loser: Blackburn
3 of 4It was another tough day for Steve Kean's men as they battle against the spectre of relegation.
Today's match against a Swansea team who have little to play for had the possibility of a good result for Blackburn. Instead, they went down with a 3-0 defeat.
Gylfi Sigurdsson's opener was unstoppable, and it was just what Swansea deserved.
Blackburn are their own worst enemy at times, and the defending for Swansea's second goal was unacceptable.
Scott Dann gave the ball away in his own penalty area, Nathan Dyer rewarding him with a well-placed finish.
Dann then unfortunately then scored an own goal after a Sigurdsson shot rebounded off the post, only to bounce off of Dann and into the net, which capped a miserable day for the centre-back.
There was more bad news, as Yakubu was forced off with an injury.
Blackburn look like a team running out of ideas, and at this point, they're running out of games too.
2nd Biggest Loser: Norwich City
4 of 4When you lose 6-1, it's hard not to come out of the day as the biggest loser, and Norwich had one of their worst games of the season today.
John Ruddy has been having an excellent season, with some calling for him to be called up to the England squad.
Today was not a match that he'll be hoping to be judged on, though, as it was one to forget.
Only he knows how he let Carlos Tevez's opener get into the net. His positioning was good, and he looked to have it under control. But these things happen to goalies, and it does not detract from the fine season that Ruddy has had so far.
Things didn't get any better from there for Norwich, as City netted six times thanks to some absolutely awful defending.
This shouldn't bother the club and its fans too much, though. They've had an awesome first season back in the Premier League, and one result won't change that.
