Derek Anderson Re-signs with Browns: Will He Stay?

Fritz SchillingFeb 29, 2008

It didn't take long for quarterback Derek Anderson and the Cleveland Browns to reach an agreement.  Anderson was offered a three-year extension with the team, and his agents quickly finalized the deal.

GM Phil Savage said that if Anderson hadn’t accepted the deal, he probably wouldn't be returning.

But with the contract complete and Anderson sure to be back, the Browns have more options.  They are focusing on picking up help on the defensive side, preferably defensive tackle.  With both Brady Quinn and Anderson, they will be able to deal either one of them.

If they are able to pick up a quality defensive player—especially without giving up a lot—I'd say, do it.  I think they should bring both Quinn and Anderson back for one more year, and then make a decision after that.

With Anderson re-signing, they can mold Quinn even more and prepare him for the future.

That said, they may have to sacrifice one of these players—and if they do, I think it has to be Quinn.  Although it might not go over well with the Cleveland faithful, Quinn is still unproven.  It’s true that Anderson has only started one year in the league, but the Browns would be foolish to get rid of him after the season he’s had.

Quinn has talent, but Anderson ran this offense last year and was pretty successful.

The Browns have a tough choice before them, but in order to improve they need defensive talent.

Whatever decision they make, let's just hope it works out for the best.  As a Cleveland fan, I can say that losing is something we've all grown accustomed.  It’s time that the Browns fill the holes to capitalize on the great potential of this team.
