England Manager: Sol Campbell and Alan Shearer Call for Immediate Appointment

Craig DaviesJun 7, 2018

English football, at international level, has been floundering for years, if not decades, and the handling of the latest managerial issue has stirred some anger.

When Fabio Capello resigned in February, many questions were raised. Why was he undermined?  Why wasn't he sacked after a tremendously poor World Cup showing? And who would be next in the hot seat?

With the Euro 2012 in Ukraine and Poland fast approaching, many thought a quick appointment would be made.

They were wrong.

Immediate

Former England Captain Alan Shearer and one-time international teammate Sol Campbell are adamant that an appointment should be made sooner rather than later.

Ex-Arsenal defender Campbell believes more harm than good is coming out of a delayed appointment, with the national team set to jet off for a Euro 2012 training camp in early June.

Adrian Bevington, the managing director for England's team, is of the complete opposite viewpoint. He believes any manager coming in "will be able to hit the ground running very, very quickly."

It is surely too hard to believe that any manager will come in at this late stage and have an impact on the squad that could transform them into European champions.

And this is true, given the competition that will be on show.

Appointment

The FA have maintained that an appointment will be made at the end of the season, which is the state the Premier League currently finds itself approaching, if not in.

So this makes the calls of Shearer and Campbell even more relevant. While the pair believe Harry Redknapp is the man for the job, who else is in the frame? And crucially who do people want?

While Redknapp is the overwhelming favorite, will he leave Tottenham Hotspur at this moment?

People have also been turned off by the club's recent downturn, but this is surely just a blip.

Roy Hodgson has also been mentioned, as well as Stuart Pearce, who took charge of the team in a friendly at home against the Netherlands and could take charge on an interim basis with a permanent successor to Capello named later this year.

Or could another foreign manager be the answer? Who do you think is the man to succeed is one of the most pressured jobs in world football though?
