Video: St. Pauli Striker Marius Ebbers Scores with Hand of God, Tattles on Self
Nice guys don't always finish last. This season, they might even earn promotion.
On Tuesday night in the 2. Bundesliga, St. Pauli striker Marius Ebbers scored a headed goal in the 80th minute with his side tied 1-1 with Union Berlin. Replays showed that Ebbers had used his hand to help him score the goal.
But was he about to tell the referee that?

As a matter of fact, yes. That's exactly what Ebbers did.
Ebbers, a 34-year-old veteran, informed the referee of his transgression and the referee disallowed the goal. Simple as that.
"“(The referee) asked me if I had scored with my hand and I told him that I used both my head and my hand," Ebbers said after the match. "It was an honest error. The angel on my shoulder prevailed.”
"
The angel on his shoulder! How can you not love this guy?
The football gods apparently love him. St. Pauli won the game anyway, thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Fin Bartels. With the win, St. Pauli are one point behind Fortuna Dusseldorf in the race for the Bundesliga's promotion playoff.
Believe it or not, Ebbers' actions actually fall in line with his club. St. Pauli is well known for marching to their own drum.
Just click over to the club's official Web site and see for yourself: Yes, that's a skull-and-crossbones banner. That's the club's unofficial flag.
There's more. Here is a link to St. Pauli's list of "Fundamental Principles." Also, smoking and drinking are allowed at the stadium, and the team takes the pitch to the tune of AC/DC's "Hell's Bells."
So, yeah, St. Pauli and their players do things their own way—even if that means tattling on themselves.
That's pretty cool if you ask me.
