SEC Football: Firing of Petrino Was Inevitable, Arkansas Does Right Thing
Any time you show up to a press conference the day after you were involved in a motorcycle accident, while wearing a neck brace, the amount of suspicion is already coursing through everyone.
The minute that people find out that a 25-year-old woman was involved in the crash with you, well, you're as good as gone.
Bobby Petrino is just that: gone from Arkansas, as ESPN's Joe Schad reported, and Arkansas made the right decision in removing a possible dark cloud over their athletic program that would've continued to loom if Petrino had remained.
This is the beauty of news: When details begin to pile up, our emotions on how we react to the situation changes rather quickly.
And the proof was in the pudding as the days passed.
When the news broke of Petrino's accident, everyone was obviously concerned for his well-being. But then he shows up to a press conference the very next day wearing a neck brace and showing off his battle scars for the world to see (and for some to laugh at).
Why wouldn't Petrino have something to hide if he had to rush and give a press conference the next day after he was flung off a bike? It would've been like Bill Clinton rushing to do a press conference the second he finished up with Monica Lewinsky.
OK, maybe not that extreme, but you can see the comparison.
Then the news comes up that a 25-year-old woman, Jessica Dorrell, a former volleyball player who played at Arkansas, was with Petrino on the bike and in the accident.
Maybe that's where the Lewinsky/Clinton comparison comes in.
Now I'm not saying that there were possible flings going on between Petrino and Dorrell because, really, that would've just made this story that much more insane than it already is. But if you're with a woman younger than you, and it's not your daughter, I'm sorry, but that is grounds for immediate exiting of the Petrino household.
Especially if he gave the girl $20,000 when Dorrell was hired.
Arkansas is luckily to get away from any drama that might've lingered for a continuous period of time. After an 11-win season and a win in the Cotton Bowl against Kansas State, one could only wonder what would've happened if Petrino stayed on board and nothing had been done.
Now it's a good chance for Taver Johnson to try and lead Arkansas to continued success for the Razorbacks.
As for Petrino, he might be a really good college football coach, but he's bound to not get any job offers for the longest time. His reputation was already shot when he left the Atlanta Falcons for the Razorbacks. But with this scandal forever lingering in his mind, who would take the chance?
More than likely no one, and all he has is himself to blame.
