Liverpool FC: What Will Happen If the Reds Fail to Beat Blackburn Tuesday Night?

Simon EdmondsJun 7, 2018

The bad run continues for Liverpool, who have now taken just four points from their last eight Premier League fixtures.

After what had been a promising start to the campaign, Champions League football seemed a possibility.

However, as this season draws to a conclusion, it's painfully apparent that the Reds are going to have one of their worst finishes in Premier League history (if not the worst).

Last Saturday's home draw against Aston Villa ended a three-match losing streak but did no good in settling the Pool players, fans or manager's nerves.

Tuesday night they travel to Ewood Park, a ground which King Kenny will remember with great affection as the last place where he coached a league-winning side.

These are dark days for the Rovers, who after defeat to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday sit in the relegation zone.

Unfortunately for Kenny Dalglish's men, this means that the fixture will be, if anything, more of a challenge than if it had come at an earlier stage of the season, when Blackburn were not fighting for their Premier League lives as they are now.

Factor in Liverpool's dire showing of late, and we could very well witness the classic end-of-the-season upset that so many teams in the top half of the table have suffered against relegation candidates.

But if this does happen, and Blackburn topple the odds to take away the three points, where does it leave Liverpool?

In a very unhappy state of affairs is the answer.

Straight off the bat it would extend their run of win-less games to five, averaging at less than a point per game for the past nine fixtures.

On top of that, it would leave Pool four points behind greatest rivals Everton and would clump them in with a variety of teams on the 40-43 point mark.

In fact, as my previous article questioned, it would very much set up the possibility that the Reds could finish the year in the bottom half of the table.

If King Kenny and his merry men win, however, it closes the gap on Everton to just a single point and is a huge step away from that bottom 10.

Liverpool need to win this game. I can't even imagine the repercussions if they don't.

Can they?

Of course they can. They are a much better side on paper—and in general play—than Rovers this season, who have looked sloppy at the best of times.

Even a semi-decent performance tonight from the Pool will be enough to see home a victory...but unfortunately even by their standards that has been somewhat rare recently.

I can see the game ending in a draw, a result that favours neither side.

But look on the bright side, Liverpool fans, there's still the FA Cup!
