World Football Gossip Roundup: Man City Need More, Andy Carroll, Rio for England
Andy Carroll has attracted even more critics, and Manchester City need yet more players.
The Easter edition of the B/R world football gossip roundup features those two stories, along with a bit of in-fighting, a Peruvian midfielder, a possible reunion at Elland Road and a familiar old candidate for England's Euro 2012 squad.
Sound good? Read on for details.
More for Mancini?
1 of 6Roberto Mancini casts such a sympathetic shadow. If the Manchester City manager just had a little more money and a few more players, he could really and truly compete with big, bad Manchester United.
Erm, sort of.
From the The Sun on Sunday:
"ROBERTO MANCINI insists he must splash the cash again this summer — despite spending £210million in two years.
The Manchester City boss plans a £37m double raid on Lille for striker Eden Hazard and left-back Lucas Digne.
The Italian is desperate to avoid a repeat of the last three months that have shown his expensive squad found wanting after losing key midfielders and defenders to international duty and injury.
"
Yes, that's it. The lack of money and the dearth of quality players have doomed City this season.
It doesn't have anything to do with in-fighting and a lack of chemistry or anything.
Andy Carroll and the Liverpool Way
2 of 6Andy Carroll is running out of time at Liverpool, if the papers are to be believed.
From The Mirror:
"[A]n Anfield insider revealed: “Kenny has gone out of his way to protect Carroll from criticism. He’s straight with his staff, but many people here are concerned that players like Andy have not adapted to the Liverpool way.”
Carroll has told friends he’d welcome a return to Tyneside but his current wages would break Newcastle's pay scale and they would only be interested in a cut-price summer deal.
"
Oh dear.
The Reds' £35 million signing came on for the final 25 minutes of Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday.
Liverpool After Peruvian Midfielder?
3 of 6In other Liverpool news, the Reds are reportedly in talks to sign Peruvian midfielder Juan Manuel Vargas from Fiorentina.
According to The Sun, Fiorentina rejected an £8 million bid for Vargas from Bayern Munich.
Fiorentina want Liverpool's 18-year-old prospect Jesus Fernandez Saez in a potential loan deal, according to the report.
Fight for Adebayor?
4 of 6The Sun also reports that Tottenham Hotspur's Emmanuel Adebayor is a wanted man.
According to this report, several clubs want to sign the Togolese striker, who is currently on loan at Spurs from Manchester City.
"City boss Roberto Mancini is happy for Spurs to buy the Togo international this summer but believes many of Europe’s top clubs will be keen.
Mancini said: “Adebayor is playing well and I am happy for him. He’s a good guy and a good player and I am happy.
“If at the end of the season he wants to stay at Tottenham they will buy him, or another team will. There are a lot of teams that want Manu.”
"
Mancini said he won't bring Adebayor back to City.
Warnock to Raid QPR?
5 of 6According to the Daily Mirror, Neil Warnock wants to fuel his Leeds United revolution with, uh, Paddy Kenny.
"Elland Road boss Warnock declared “major surgery” is required on the squad he inherited from sacked predecessor Simon Grayson, and he wants to bring in at least SIX new players in the summer.
Keeper Kenny, 33, tops his wish-list, and he is set to swoop for QPR’s No1 at the end of the season.
Halifax-born Kenny also played under Warnock’s management at Bury and Sheffield United.
"
The report also says Warnock wants defender Clint Hill and midfielder Shaun Derry from QPR.
Rio for England?
6 of 6Finally, we end with a suggestion from Sir Alex Ferguson about England's roster this summer at Euro 2012.
Rio Ferdinand should go. Seriously.
From the Daily Mail:
"Ferguson said: "Rio has had to change his game. He can't rely on his pace the way he used to as a kid. He was such a pure athlete and he was so mobile he could outrun anyone.
"He used to take advantage of that. He can't do that now so his positioning has improved and he plays a bit deeper than he used to.
"Now his experience is a vital part of his game. He has gone a long way to helping Jonny Evans come on and the young keeper [David de Gea], too."
"
Yes, well—whatever you say, Fergie. You know best.
