Tiger Woods: Why Woods Will Continue to Implode in Round 3

Ian HanfordJun 7, 2018

Tiger Woods will fall off the face of the Earth in Round 3. Woods shot a 75 in Round 2. That trend will continue as the pressure continues to grow.

Woods' fans and golf fans in general were intrigued by Woods' five-stroke victory in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The victory was Woods' first tournament victory in over two years.

The 2012 Masters has shown Woods' flaws. His victory at Bay Hill looks like a fluke.

The old Woods would turn things around in the Masters' final two rounds. This is not the old Woods, and this is why he will continue to implode in Round 3.

The Tiger Tracker

Tiger Woods faces more pressure than any golfer in the 2012 Masters Tournament. ESPN.com's Tiger Tracker sums it all up.

Do you see a McIlroy Tracker or a Westwood Tracker? I didn't think so.

Woods is an American icon. His name resonates beyond the sporting world. That puts him in a rare category among athletes. When things are going well, that category is a blessing. But when things are down, it lands you under a high-powered microscope.

With every green Woods misses, the pressure goes up a notch. The eyes of the golfing world rest solely on his shoulders.

The moment has rarely been too big for Woods. He is one of the most clutch athletes in all of sports. The pressure he is facing is too big, even for Woods to handle.

Battling Himself, not the Competition

Woods is waging war against every inch of his swing instead of battling the competition for Masters supremacy.

Woods' skills off the tee have always been one of his strongest suits. He has not been able to drive the ball with any accuracy in the first two round of this year's Masters.

The inability to hit the fairway has drastically affected Woods' ability to play the ball onto the green. He has forced himself to play balls on the fringe of the fairway. That has often led him to the bunker and not the putting green.

Spectators can almost see Woods question himself as he begins his backswing. He is questioning his natural ability and committing unforced errors because of it. Woods did not become who he is today by questioning his ability to hit the ball. He must get out of his own head, and golf the way he knows how.

Woods won't do it, at least not in this tournament. He has done too much damage to his psyche. The cracks will shine through on Saturday.
