NBA Draft 2012: Lottery Picks Who Will Be Busts at the Next Level

Rob GoldbergJun 7, 2018

For every LeBron James in the NBA draft, there is a Darko Milicic right behind him. Who will be this year's Darko?

With general managers drafting more on potential than results, the number of busts has risen in recent seasons.

These men will be taken early, but they will not have successful careers in the NBA.

Jared Sullinger, Ohio State

Although he was extremely productive in his two years at Ohio State, Sullinger will not be as successful in the pros.

The power forward was able to average over 17 points and nine rebounds in each season, but mostly by dominating smaller defenders.

Without elite athleticism, Sullinger will have a hard time scoring against bigger players. The team's loss to Kansas revealed his shortcomings, as he was only able to shoot 5-of-19 from the field against the seven-foot Jeff Withey.

Unfortunately, the NBA is full of tall, athletic, frontcourt players.

Austin Rivers, Duke

Rivers has the ability to be a prolific scorer, but there is little evidence he can turn himself into a successful point guard.

He was surrounded by talented players during his only season at Duke, but he was unable to create opportunities for his teammates and averaged only 2.1 assists per game.

There are plenty of players who can score in the NBA, but a point guard who cannot pass and plays suspect defense will be out of the league before long.

Andre Drummond, Connecticut

It is easy to understand what about Drummond has scouts so excited. He is 6'10", insanely athletic and can be a force on the defensive side of the ball.

Unfortunately, he has shown no indication he will ever be able to do the same against NBA talent.

The freshman was able to put up solid numbers, but he was able to take advantage of his great athleticism instead of skill and fundamentals.

Most of Drummond's points came on putbacks and alley-oops, which he will have to work harder for at the next level.

Based on his year at Connecticut, he might not be able to do that.
