Can Arsene Wenger Still Cut It at the Top of the Premier League?

Simon EdmondsJun 7, 2018

No fan can argue the illustrious record and success of the great Arsene Wenger.

Over the past few decades he has almost single-handedly helped Arsenal claw their way to the top end of English and European football. But at the start of this particular season questions were being asked of his ability to manage anymore. A crippling 8-2 defeat at the hands of bitter rivals Manchester United arguably put Wenger's job on the line for the first time since taking over at the Gooners.

However, despite form not picking up directly after this, a recent surge of great play from the men in red and white has seen Arsenal climb back up to 3rd in the Premier League standings. In a flash the talk of Wenger not being able to cope at the top of world football has seemed to completely disappear.

But even with this being the case, one has to wonder how long it will be before either Wenger finally decides to leave or is unceremoniously discharged. A key problem that people have highlighted about the Frenchman's managerial style is his seeming inability to sign players—or more to the point the inability to sign good players who perform on a regular basis.

Of course there are exceptions to this rule. The likes of Nasri, Fabregas and Robin van Persie have all been masterful additions to the ranks at the Emirates. Notably two of these three players are no longer with Arsenal.

In terms of on-field tactics, many would agree that Wenger has generally been able to keep up with the changing style of Premier League football (something that "King Kenny" has arguably failed to do). However at times we see an erratic and confusing choice of selection from Arsene.

In terms of the pressure at the top, a man of his seasoned experience should have a pretty good tolerance for both the highs of success and the extreme lows of failure. There is no doubt that if Arsenal manage to qualify for the Champions League this season all thoughts of showing Wenger the door will be forgotten.

However looking past that, is Wenger really the man to bring Premier League glory back to Arsenal?

Its well documented that Arsenal has failed to win a title or trophy of any kind for the past seven years. With this in mind, the key question is this: Are Arsenal fans happy to stick with their legendary leader and settle for the likes of "always runner-ups," or take a step forward towards actually winning the league again. Whatever the case, this season has been somewhat salvaged for Arsenal. The Champions League looks likely to be the port of call for the Gooners next season.
