2012 NFL Free Agents: Ranking the 5 Biggest Buyers Left
The 2012 edition of free agency in the National Football League is just over three weeks old, and some teams—such as the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers—have already made big splashes by signing high-profile players to lucrative contracts.
However, there are still any number of players looking for work and any number of NFL teams with needs to fill. That includes this handful of NFL squads that have the holes in their roster and/or the salary cap space to be big players in free agency as the draft approaches.
5. Cleveland Browns
1 of 5The Cleveland Browns entered the offseason with a roster full of holes and over $20 million in salary cap space. But so far, the team has been whisper quiet in free agency, with defensive end Frostee Rucker headlining a nondescript group of signings.
Cleveland general manager Tom Heckert is no fan of improving a team by signing high-priced free agents, but given the pitiful state of the Cleveland offense, the team may still have a signing or three up their sleeve depending on how the draft shakes out.
4. Cincinnati Bengals
2 of 5Coming off a surprising playoff run in 2011, the Bengals entered free agency with loads of salary cap space. But outside the signing of running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis and replacing some lost depth on the defensive front, Cincinnati has been quiet so far this offseason.
Team owner Mike Brown has a reputation for being, well, frugal, but while the Bengals may be unlikely to ink anyone to a fat contract, they may still look to add depth in the secondary or along the offensive line in free agency.
3. Tennessee Titans
3 of 5The Tennessee Titans gave their fans hope for the future with a 9-7 season in 2011 that showed signs of promise, and although the team lost cornerback Cortland Finnegan in free agency and failed to acquire Peyton Manning, the team was able to address the pass rush by signing Kamerion Wimbley.
The Titans still have a number of needs, including the interior of the offensive line and the defensive backfield, which, combined with their nearly $20 million in cap room, signals that Tennessee may not be finished with free agency just yet.
2. Seattle Seahawks
4 of 5The Seattle Seahawks may not have landed Peyton Manning, but the team did win the quarterback consolation prize, agreeing to terms with free agent Matt Flynn on a three-year, $26 million contract that headlines their signings this offseason.
The Seahawks still have nearly $19 million in cap room and needs along both the offensive and defensive lines and at linebacker, and depending on Seattle's draft strategy, the team could be very active in the latter portions of free agency.
1. Jacksonville Jaguars
5 of 5After suffering through a miserable 5-11 2011 campaign, the Jacksonville Jaguars have begun the business of trying to climb back into contention in the AFC South, beginning with the free-agent signings of cornerback Aaron Ross and wide receiver Laurent Robinson.
However, the Jaguars still have needs all over the roster and more than $20 million in cap space remaining, so there's no reason to think that the Jaguars are done shopping, though the spree may slow down until after the draft.
