NFL Rumors: Bill Parcells Would Be a Poor Fit for the Minnesota Vikings

Ryan PhillipsJun 2, 2018

The Minnesota Vikings claim that they aren't looking to add two-time Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Parcells, and if that is true, the Vikings have dodged a bullet.

Parcells is a respected coach who has done a lot during his career, but at 70, he is just too out of touch for today's players to get behind.

On Wednesday, the New York Post reported that the Vikings had indeed talked to Parcells about coming on board as the team's head coach and general manager. But while those talks happened, they reportedly occurred months ago, and there has been no recent contact between the two sides.

The Vikings apparently came to their senses and decided to pass on Parcells, who simply would not be a fit in today's NFL.

"The Big Tuna" is a two-time AP NFL Coach of the Year and has an overall record of 183-138-1 during his 18-year career. But during his last stop as a coach—a four-year stint with the Dallas Cowboys—Parcells had trouble motivating his players.

The Cowboys went 34-30 under the aging coach, while failing to win the NFC East and losing both of the team's playoff games. Parcells retired from coaching in 2007 before taking a position as the executive vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins.

The Vikings have now apparently moved on from their flirtation with Parcells, and that is the right move. While always known as a harsh disciplinarian, he had a way of irking players with attacks through the media and his confrontational style.

Today's NFL players simply don't respond to guys like Parcells the way they used to. The Vikings are a young team that needs to grow and needs an encouraging voice to help with that process.

Parcells just doesn't fit that mold.
