Craziest Baseball Brawl Videos on YouTube
While it's nowhere near as violent as sports like football and hockey, and may in fact involve the least contact of any major sport, baseball still has its moments when it comes to aggression and violence.
In light of the recent bench-clearing incident between Troy Tulowitzki and Ubaldo Jimenez, now seems like an appropriate time to look back at some of the crazier brawls in baseball history.
Here's a look at what I have deemed the craziest baseball brawls available for viewing on YouTube.
Greenville Drive vs. Charleston River Dogs
1 of 14It didn't take long for tempers to flare in the this minor league game, as Greenville pitcher Miguel Celestino hit Charleston outfielder and top Yankees' prospect Slade Heathcott in the head with the second pitch of the game.
The speedy outfielder held his own against Greenville catcher Christian Vazquez, taking him down a number of times, but in the end, he was the one ejected and escorted off the field.
Quebec Capitales vs. North Shore Spirit
2 of 14This clip comes from a matchup between CanAm League teams.
With his team trailing 5-0, the pitcher for the North Shore Spirit decides to make things interesting and throw at Eddie Lantigua of the Quebec Capitales on back-to-back pitches.
No doubt the highlight of the brawl is the unexpected kick the pitcher delivers to the charging Lantigua, followed by his fired up celebration and glove twirling.
Fun fact: Lantigua holds the CanAm League single-season record for home runs with 31 and RBI with 112—both achieved back in 2005.
TruTV Narrated Brawl
3 of 14This is your standard baseball brawl, as a player is beaned in retaliation for a previous beaning and doesn't take kindly to it.
However, what makes this one truly special is the fact that it was featured on TruTV and is narrated in the same vain as World's Wildest Police Videos, making the fight seem all the more epic.
Boerne High School vs. New Braunfels Canyon High School
4 of 14A play at the plate can often end in a collision or worse, and in this high school game, a hard tag and taunt by the catcher following a play at the plate led to a bench-clearing brawl.
The highlight of the brawl comes at 1:03 as there is a good chance that the player in the purple bullpen jacket was a multi-sport star, displaying some solid wrestling moves in trying to take down the opposition.
Cuban League Brawl
5 of 14I don't have a whole lot of background information on this video, just the fact that there are a troubling number of bat-wielding Cuban League players who are none too thrilled with each other. Enjoy.
Chinese Professional Baseball League Brawl
6 of 14Another case of a play at the plate sparking an all-out brawl. The runner for the red team absolutely levels the catcher, and upon hearing something he didn't like, started throwing punches.
Later on in the game, there was another confrontation at the plate when a runner decided to forgo sliding all together and simply attempted to clothesline the catcher on his way home.
Winnipeg Goldeyes vs. Joliet Jack Hammers
7 of 14This Canadian league brawl starts as any other, with former big leaguer Juan Diaz, who put together a .294 BA, 273 HR, 844 RBI line over 14 minor league seasons, charging the mound after a long at-bat ended with him being hit.
He charged the mound at full speed, and while the pitcher initially dodged him and it looked as though nothing would happen, pay close attention at the 1:18 mark of the video as Diaz gets ahold of someone tosses him like a rag doll. Not something you see every day.
London Majors vs. Barrie Baycats
8 of 14My immediate reaction to this video was, "There's a baseball league in London?" Actually, the Majors are in fact an Independent League team located in London, Ontario.
My second reaction was, "Wow, there are an inordinate amount of punches thrown in this brawl." Everyone involved just seems dead set on hitting someone. That is except for the pitcher, who never abandoned the mound the entire time.
Izzy Alcantara vs. World
9 of 14This one has made its way onto every "best baseball fights" list out there and earns a place here as well. While it didn't end well for Izzy Alcantara, you have to admit his approach was a smart one.
The catcher is always the first one out to the mound to break up a fight between his pitcher and a batter, so taking him out of the equation was clever.
You have to admire his take-all-comers attitude once he did reach the mound, even if he did wind up in the middle of a pile of opposing players.
Kyle Farnsworth vs. Paul Wilson
10 of 14Current Tampa Bay Rays closer Kyle Farnsworth began his big-league career with the Chicago Cubs, and while his time on the North Side spanned six unimpressive seasons, Cubs fans won't soon forget the walloping he handed Reds starter Paul Wilson when he made the ill-advised decision to charge the mound.
Bonus point if anyone can define "racky-tacked" as it appears to be a term that former Cubs announcer Steve Stone made up on the spot.
Pedro Martinez vs. Don Zimmer
11 of 14The Yankees and Red Sox have one of the most storied rivalries in all of sports, and tempers have boiled over on more than one occasion. There may be none more memorable, however, than the one that took place during the 2003 ALCS.
Martinez, notorious for throwing inside on guys and never being afraid to hit a batter, plunked the Yankees' Karim Garcia earlier in the game. Not only that, but a fight had broken out in New York's bullpen with a Red Sox grounds crew member.
So when benches cleared later in the game, 72-year-old bench coach Don Zimmer, in a sudden daze of Hulk-like rage, ran at Martinez, and was promptly thrown to the ground by the 32-year-old pitcher.
Obviously, this was the talk of the baseball world for a short time, with everyone weighing in on who was more at fault. In the end, it doesn't matter who was more wrong, because it provided us with one of the oddest moments in baseball history.
Armando Benitez vs. Tino Martinez (Orioles vs. Yankees)
12 of 14After giving up a three-run home run to Bernie Williams to surrender the lead in the eighth inning, Orioles reliever Armando Benitez took out his frustration by drilling Tino Martinez in the back with a fastball.
The blatant beanball didn't sit well with Yankees' reliever Graeme Lloyd, who rushed in from the bullpen and went after Benitez, sparking an all-out brawl.
Darryl Strawberry later landed a cheap shot on Benitez outside the Yankees' dugout that led to him getting his face bloodied by the Orioles Alan Mills.
Five players' total received suspensions stemming from the brawl.
Juan Marichal vs. John Roseboro
13 of 14The Dodgers and Giants were one of sport's most heated rivalries back in the 1960s, and things got ugly during a game between the two teams back in 1965.
Future Hall of Famer Juan Marichal was on the hill for the Giants and had already brushed back a pair of Dodger hitters by the time he came to the plate for his first at-bat in the third inning.
Dodgers' catcher John Roseboro decided to get some retaliation, throwing the ball back to the pitcher extremely close to his head hoping to get a rise out of him. He got more than that, as Marichal went after him with the bat, hitting him in the head and giving him a gash that required 14 stitches and eventually cost Marichal $1,750 and an eight-game suspension.
Nolan Ryan vs. Robin Ventura
14 of 14I think it's safe to say that this was not how Robin Ventura saw things unfolding when he charged the mound against a man old enough to be his father.
After the 46-year-old Ryan plunked the 26-year-old Ventura during what was one of the last starts of Ryan's illustrious career, Ventura charged the mound and was almost immediately put in a headlock by Ryan.
Ryan proceeded to wail on Ventura's face, landing a solid six punches before Rangers catcher Ivan Rodriguez finally pulled him out of Ryan's grip.
Ventura and White Sox manager Gene Lamont were both ejected from the game, but Ryan, who never even left the mound, was allowed to remain in the game. He held the Sox hitless from that point forward.
