Pittsburgh Football: Linebacker Arrested in Bizarre Sequence of Events
News popped Saturday that a Pitt linebacker has fallen prey to the issues of the spring. Carl Fleming, a reserve outside backer for the Panthers, was arrested at 10pm Friday after some pretty eventful pre-arrest moves. Instead of paraphrasing, which would not do this story justice, here's what happened:
"As Fleming exited the store and got into his Ford Taurus, police approached and attempted to stop him for a traffic violation. Fleming pulled away and attempted to hit the marked police car before crashing into a guard rail, according to a criminal complaint.
Fleming then shoved a plastic bag containing marijuana in his mouth and started to swallow, authorities said. Officers pulled Fleming from the car and, after failing to remove the bag, punched him, successfully dislodging the drugs from his mouth, the criminal complaint states.
Despite commands to remain on the ground, Fleming struggled with officers before being handcuffed, authorities said.
"
Bizarre is the only word that comes to mind to describe that interaction because there is so much there. We have Fleming committing the original violation, one of the benign traffic nature.
However, this situation then escalated because upon realizing he had pot on his person, Fleming allegedly decided to make a run for it. He reportedly tried to hit a police car, crashed into a guard rail and then attempted to eat weed in the bag. Oh, and let's not forget the physical struggle that ensued until he was finally handcuffed.
The 6'2", 220 lbs redshirt junior has been suspended indefinitely by head coach Paul Chryst as the matter sorts itself out. Unlike our pal Kane Whitehurst at Arkansas, it seems the possession was not nearly enough for Fleming. In addition to the possession he added two counts of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, fleeing or eluding police, tampering with evidence and vehicular offenses to his list of charges.
This is not a good look for the kid and a tough move for Paul Chryst, who is in his first season as a head coach. The discipline to be handed down will help set the tone for Chryst's program, and we'll watch what happens as the courts get this taken care of and Pitt makes their call.
