Why Steve Nash Would Make Miami Heat Unbeatable
Steve Nash caused quite a stir on the Dan Patrick Show yesterday when he said that he wouldn't be returning to the Phoenix Suns unless they upgraded their roster.
What's even more interesting is what Nash told Patrick about the possibilities of him joining LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the offseason.
"I would listen. He's phenomenal. I love what they're doing there. A lot of people don't like them because they put all that talent there. But they're professional, they play hard, they play together. Their coaching staff has done a great job, so I have a tremendous amount of respect for them.
I would definitely listen.
"
It's no surprise that Nash would have an interest in Miami, given his want for a championship before he calls it a career.
However, the Heat are a bit of an unrealistic option given the fact that they have no salary cap room and won't be able to offer Nash more than their mid-level exemption.
But hypothetically, let's say Nash comes off his stance of not wanting to take a pay cut and joins the Heat in time for the beginning of the 2012-13 season. What would that mean for the NBA?
For one, if competitive balance is already lost now, it surely wouldn't be returning any time soon.
On paper, a Miami Heat team with Nash in the picture would be next to unbeatable.
Miami doesn't get horrible play from its point guards right now, but they would be foolish to think that Nash wouldn't be a huge upgrade over Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole.
Even at the age of 38, Nash is still leading the NBA in assists at 11.2 per game.
This roster, filled with superstars in LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, still needs a point guard to make things easier for them. They shouldn't have to create chances by themselves all of the time.
Nash could certainly do that.
Adding Nash would mean no one on the floor could realistically be doubled. He could keep defenses honest with his scoring ability, while his ability to run an offense is second-to-none. Despite his age, Nash is in great shape and can still get it done on the defensive end as well.
On paper, there would be simply too much talent in Miami with Nash in the fold.
Unbeatable could be an understatement.
