28 Days of Mania: What Happens to John Cena After WrestleMania 28?

David LevinJun 7, 2018

Disclaimer: This will be an ongoing series for the next 28 days leading up to the biggest event in sports entertainment, WrestleMania 28. The idea behind the piece is to build more momentum for the event and give you, the Bleacher Report fan, a chance to read, comment and weigh in with opinions about the WWE, the business and the event. It is my hope this becomes something positive and we all enjoy the ride for the next four weeks to Miami and the biggest event of the wrestling year. Enjoy.

In actuality, I need to thank John Cena for writing this article for me. He summed it up pretty well when he was bickering with The Rock in the last segment of Monday Night Raw.

After WrestleMania 28 ends and the smoke clears and a winner has his arm raised, nothing happens for Cena. He still goes about his business. He still comes to work every day. He still goes to his "office" and performs and touts the company line.

That is what Cena does. He has done that for 10 years, even at a time when, as he put it, "It wasn't so cool to be a WWE Superstar."

And whether fans loved him or hate him, he was correct when he said people still knew where he stood and what he was about and continues to rise about hate and immorality because he does not compromise.

That's a pretty good thing as far as the WWE's money machine is concerned. And whether the millions of fans love him or hate him (Let's go Cena, Cena sucks), the "Tim Tebow" of the WWE continues on.

For Cena, this is his "Super Bowl," his chance to shine. He enters with everything to gain and everything to lose at the same time.

The Rock? Well, he goes about making movies and making money and becoming an even bigger superstar in the entertainment industry on the left coast.

Cena just goes about his business. He will pick up a feud here and there. Maybe try Lord Tensai on for size or see if someone like a Christian (if he can stay healthy) or maybe his good buddy CM Punk is still able to sell for him. (I think if Punk takes on the alcoholic angle, we see him change character.)

The one thing we don't see is Cena change who he is. But does that mean we see him challenge for a WWE Title any time soon? Probably not. There are too many talents right now competing or could be competing for the top gold, and they are being held back for whatever reason (Cody Rhodes, Dolph Ziggler), while others (R-Truth, Zack Ryder) need to take a further step back.

Actually, Cena is in a good place. He can still main event and carry the brand without having to wear the gold. That makes him more valuable. That makes him a star. That makes him a "Rock-like" character in this company.

Whether he wins or loses on Sunday, Cena's status does not change. He is still loved and hated at the same time by the same fans. What it does is prove he will still be on the screen on Monday night. And it still proves his office is the only place he knows where to be.
