3 Reasons Stephen Jackson Is the Piece to Get San Antonio Spurs to NBA Finals

Trevor LowryMar 27, 2012

Stephen Jackson isn't the biggest acquisition in the San Antonio Spurs' history, but he is certainly a good one.

Jackson has been around the block to say the least, having played for seven different teams in his career.

As it stands the Spurs aren't too shabby, holding the second spot in the Western Conference. San Antonio, of course, only trails the Oklahoma City Thunder in the West.

However, Jackson is the piece to get the San Antonio Spurs back to the NBA Finals.

Read on to find out why.

Scoring Ability

1 of 3

Stephen Jackson may not be the highest scorer in the NBA, but he definitely puts up some good numbers.

Coming off of the bench, Jackson is already averaging 10.4 points in just five games with the Spurs.

San Antonio is already averaging the fourth-most points in the league, with 100.8 points per game, but more is always better.

Jackson is a good shooter and he is very capable of driving to the hoop and finishing strong at the line for the traditional three-point play.

Presence on Defense

2 of 3

The Spurs are far from being the tallest team in the NBA, so Jackson's 6'8'' stature is a huge upgrade for San Antonio.

Keep in mind, Jackson is a shooting guard, so his height will definitely effect any player that he defends and he has a huge impact on the wing because of his height.

Jackson is not only limited in guarding the shooting guard on the opposing team, but he can also guard really anyone at any position.

Jackson is a very strong and physical player and it really shows on the defensive side of the ball. He is already making a huge impact on the boards, averaging four rebounds per game with the Spurs.

Gregg Popovich Knows How to Use Him

3 of 3

To say that Gregg Popovich is a good coach would be telling a lie because he is a great coach and one of the best in the NBA.

With that said, Jackson surely hasn't been a blessing to a lot of teams that he has played for.

Luckily for the Spurs, Popovich knows exactly how to use Jackson.

Most people forget that Jackson was a part of the 2002-2003 championship season with San Antonio. Not to mention, he played a huge role for the Spurs that year, especially in the playoffs, averaging 12.8 points per game in the postseason.

Jackson may not start for this team, but Popovich will use him in a variety of ways to truly benefit the Spurs.

The fact of the matter is Popovich and Jackson already have a strong relationship together and the Pop is completely capable of handling the crazy Stephen Jackson.
