A Defining Point In Modern Football History?

TH 14Jan 17, 2009

Arsene Wenger talked about Manchester City not living in the "real world," well by what I have witnessed this week he's not far off. It's not the headline grabbing transfer fees that have been brandished around that has turned my head, but the the actual realization that not Milan but Kaka and his representatives are actually considering this.

A week ago we were talking about David Beckham joining the prestigious Milan club and the idea of seeing out his career there. After a glorious career with United and Madrid, Milan were the only club to fit his ambition.

Everyone's been telling me all week how money talks in football and I'm not naive in thinking it doesn't. I just assumed that theory only works in one way where the bigger club feed off the smaller clubs for players. For the first time we have the opposite situation where Manchester City are trying to feed off Milan? Feed off Milan?

Now I said earlier that it wasn't surprising that Milan would consider a fee of this magnitude but what really intrigued me was that Kaka advised by his father, Bosco, and Diogo Kotscho his agent are ready to sit and talk with City. There are many grey areas in the game but the choice of playing for Manchester City or Milan should be as straight forward as they come. What incentives apart from money could there be?

Let's take the managers for example; Mark Hughes is I believe a rising top manager without doubt, but to this day he has won nothing as a manager. Carlos Ancelotti on the other hand has one Serie A title and two Champions League trophies in the bag. I know not as prestigious as Fergie but still something. Ancelotti has been there and done it and currently sitting third in his league not 15th .

For the Rossoneri it's not hard to see why they would consider the money, it's a lot of zeros. This is AC Milan though, a superclub in their own right and money has never really or should be a problem for them. Players like Kaka don't come round everyday and the privelage of having him at your club should outwiegh any amounts of money, just ask Barcelona about Messi.

At 26 years of age Kaka is at a stage where the next three to four years will define how he is remembered in football history. Now no club is guaranteed success regardless of how much money you have or even what players you have, but it's obvious to see that Milan are in a better position than Man City for the next two to three years to have success. I read that Kaka is a very religious and charitable person and is not influenced by money. Then why even consider a move like this.

A friend suggested to me that with all the money that Man City were willing to give him he would able him to give a greater contribution to his weekly charitable donations. A generous thought if true, but at the expense of your career which for footballers are shorter than most is not a good enough reason.

In a world where David Beckham at 33 still has the drive and ambition to play for another one of the top clubs in the world, it makes you think where Kaka's head is at the moment. Everyone is saying he's saying all the right things "I want to grow old at Milan" and "My aim is to become, at some point in the future, the captain of this team." Is there something wrong nowadays to just say "Not Interested, Thank You."

If this unthinkable deal is to go through and Kaka does agree then I guess I've seen it all. I believe football is going in a direction which could have a detrimental effect on our game that we can't forsee. Even though I don't have much confidence in governing bodies something needs to be done now to protect the future.

We all love seeing the best players in the world coming to our league, but at what expense to the game. Are we going to allow our game to become a billionaire's poker game where there really are no limits.
