WrestleMania 28: Power Ranking the Most Anticipated Matches

Brian MaziqueMar 28, 2012

WrestleMania 28 will be known for a combination of the following things:

The time the Rock beat John Cena one, two, three in the middle of the ring, or the time Cena proved he was truly an icon by defeating the Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment.

There are two other possible standout moments that could happen at this event:

WRESTLING: OCT 02 AEW Dynamite/Rampage Pittsburgh
Monday Night RAW

The night the Undertaker's streak ended, or the rekindling of the Triple H-Shawn Michaels feud.

That's it.

No other match has the potential to take over the identity of the event. That is why those two matches top my list of most anticipated for WrestleMania 28.

Here are the complete power rankings and breakdowns:

1. The Rock vs. John Cena

There are no tangible titles on the line, but the mythical distinction of most beloved personality is certainly up for grabs. Cena has been loved for so long, it has become in vogue to hate him, and that is the truest indication of long-standing greatness.

This is how it happens:

Somewhere, someone gets the bright idea, or picks up the devil's advocacy to go against the grain. Then the hate begins for the guy everyone cheered for for the last five to seven years.

This is what is happening to Cena.

The Rock, on the other hand, is so great, and entertaining, the people never seem to tire of him. It also helps when you leave for seven years at a time. This allows your appearances to be more of an event.

In saying that, is Cena taken for granted because he hasn't had the long hiatuses?

Of course he is, but that's what we as people do to everyone that is great. Seeing these two clash at WM 28 will not only mean watching two icons in the ring together, it will also be the biggest opportunity to see where Cena's career will be headed as he moves into the next stage of his WWE existence.

2. Triple H vs. Undertaker: Hell in a Cell w/ Shawn Michaels as Special Guest Referee

First of all, it's Hell in a Cell, and it's WrestleMania. Even if it were Zack Ryder and The Great Khali, there would be some interest.

Woo, Woo, Woo.

Add in that this represents three more icons of the industry, and in almost any other WrestleMania, this would be the most anticipated.

The Taker's streak is on the line, plus fans have to be abuzz by what seems like a conflict about to erupt between Michaels and Triple H.

Will Taker continue his streak? Will the Triple H and Michaels feud rekindle?

Could this even mean a revival of DX, set to screw the Undertaker, and cost him his streak?

Who knows?

No one yet, but most of us can't wait to see how it unfolds.

3. WWE Championship: (c) CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho

You know it's a strong card when the WWE championship is the third-most anticipated match of the evening.

Punk is clearly the most popular wrestler in the world today, but Jericho is a legend in his own right. With Jericho back in the ring for a limited time, will the WWE see fit to give him a short run with the gold?

With the hardcore substance abuse angle the story has taken, it seems this could go anywhere. I have predicted for a while that I believed Jericho would win this match.

To see the title change hands is worth the anticipatory feelings, but seeing these two talented in-ring performers takes the anticipation to another level.

4. World Heavyweight Championship: (c) Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus

Bryan is trying to find the popularity to match his in-ring ability. I hate his heel angle, but seeing him and Sheamus in the ring should be awesome. Sheamus' feats of strength will be on full display against the smaller Bryan.

Bryan should be at his technical and high-flying best as well.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Bryan defeat Sheamus in this one.

The Rest of the Card

Intercontinental Championship: (c) Cody Rhodes vs. The Big Show

Not really all that fired up for this one. The WWE needs to find a suitable feud for Rhodes, and this ain't it.

This actually could be entertaining, but the lack of a real executed angle leading up to the match dims the shine for me.

Team Teddy vs. Team Johnny

Too many damn people in the ring for it not to be a battle royal. Add in no Brodus Clay and I'll pass.

Maria Menounos and Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix and Eve Torres

Until Kharma returns, I have no interest in any match in the Divas division.

It should be an entertaining night; throw in a few surprise appearances and plot twists, and it could be historic.
