College Football Recruiting 2013: 4-Star WR Ra'Shaad Samples Injury Update

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

Dallas Skyline wide receiver Ra'Shaad Samples was putting up an MVP-worthy performance this weekend at the Nike Football Training Camp in Dallas before disaster struck.

The Rivals 4-star wide receiver and highly-coveted recruit went down with what appeared to be a left ankle injury and was carted off the field. His father and coach at Skyline, told ESPN, "He's got a plastic cast on for now. He's wearing a little wrap and some cloth on it. We will go in Monday and see what the doctors say."

Those doctors have spoken and Damon Sayles of ESPN writes:

"

Samples, a 2013 Under Armour All-American, said doctors found a small break and a stretch of his tibia but found no ligament damage. He is expected to miss 3-4 months, but took consolation in the fact his ligaments were in good shape. Ligament damage could have put him out for an extended period and was speculated to jeopardize a portion of his senior year.

The news is not great, but it is not terrible either. While dealing with an injury is never what one wants, the timing could be much worse. Samples will have ample time to rehab and get in shape before practice starts this summer.

This does, however, seem to be an unfortunate problem for the 6', 170-pound wide receiver. Sayles quotes the Skyline star saying, "I rehab really hard. I actually came back with more range of motion on my broken ankle than the other one. I had more mobility because I did so much in rehab. It worked out for the best."

Samples broke the fibula, tibia and ankle bone in his left leg back in his sophomore year. Although he says it worked out for the best and he's a strong worker in rehab, there will be some durability concerns attached to him as he enters the next level of his playing career.

That said, the rising senior doesn't expect the injury to slow down his recruiting process and he plans to visit schools as he would if he were healthy.

Tops among his potential trips include a return to Texas Tech, a venture out West to USC and looks at Notre Dame, Ohio State and possibly California. He visited the Red Raiders in late February and came away impressed with his first trip to Lubbock.

The star receiver has upwards of 30 offers and counting.
