Dallas Cowboys: Taking a Closer Look at the Team Needs This Offseason

Alex HallJun 7, 2018

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told his team's fanbase that this offseason would be a busy one for America's Team, and Jones has made good on his vow.

With Brandon Carr headlining the free-agency signings, multiple team needs have been addressed already, with just a few more pieces left to fill.

The secondary has been cleaned out of players like Terence Newman and Alan Ball, and have been replaced with pnames like Brodney Pool and Brandon Carr.

The offensive line has two new guards to bring into the fold in Mackenzy Bernadeau and Nate Livings, while Kyle Kosier has been released by the team.

Even with some smart signings during free agency, there are still some positions that need addressing in Big D.

Defensive Tackle:

A position that will most likely be addressed in the upcoming NFL Draft, defensive tackle is the most pressing need left on the Cowboys' offseason grocery list. Grabbing a DT in the early rounds would give Dallas the opportunity to place Jay Ratliff back at defensive end and a rookie who could come in right away and start producing.

Cornerback:

While adding Carr is certainly a huge upgrade for Dallas, that doesn't change the fact that fellow corner Mike Jenkins' contract is up after the 2012 season and would leave Big D with only the ex-Chief and Orlando Scandrick as proven players at the position.

Dallas will likely look to the draft in order to provide a hopeful future at the position, but it wouldn't shock me to see them sign a veteran at a bargain price to prepare for Jenkins' possible departure in 2013.

Center:

I know everyone keeps saying that Phil Costa will have another year under his belt, should be improved....yada, yada yada. I don't care if this guy finally learns how to snap the ball while Dallas is in the shotgun formation, he needs to ride the pine next season.

There are a few guys left in free agency like Dan Koppen, Andre Gurode and Jeff Saturday leading the notable names still out there. Dallas would be wise to pick up a young prospect at the position in one of the draft's first four rounds and sign a wily, proven veteran who can come in and start right away.

That way, Cowboys fans won't have to worry about their 3rd-and-10 situations being ruined by their center's inability to play his position, and quarterback Tony Romo will no longer have to brace himself for high or low snaps out of the shotgun. Meanwhile, Big D would be grooming the future at the position while Costa wears street gear as the team's last possible option at center.

Slot Receiver:

America's Team is at their best when there are three wide receivers opposing defenses have to worry about on top of tight end Jason Witten.

Dallas saw success with this formula a few years ago when Terry Glenn, Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton was giving defenses fits while Witten reaped the benefits of single coverage (usually up against a linebacker), and again last season with Dez Bryant, Miles Austin and Laurent Robinson.

With Robinson now a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Dallas is in need of a proven veteran wideout to step in and produce similar results. While the team did re-sign Kevin Ogletree, he's not the answer to take over Robinson's old spot.

Crayton is actually a free agent and wouldn't be a bad guy to bring back, considering he knows a fair amount of the players on Dallas' roster while having chemistry with Romo. Other solid Robinson replacements are Braylon Edwards, Plaxico Burress and Greg Camarillo.
