LSU Football: Reaction and Analysis of Tigers' Pro Day
All eyes were on Baton Rouge on Thursday, as LSU held its annual pro day showcasing former Tigers looking to make the jump to the next level. With Morris Claiborne, Michael Brockers and Rueben Randle all rumored to be first-round picks, the stakes were high.
You can view the full spreadsheet of results here. Some things stood out:
Cornerback Morris Claiborne didn't impress everyone. Bleacher Report's NFL Draft Lead Writer Matt Miller tweeted out that one scout told him Claiborne looked "sluggish and thin."
His 40-yard dash times didn't seem to suffer, though. Claiborne clocked 4.39 and 4.44 times on Thursday, which is an improvement from the 4.50 he ran at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Michael Brockers is a beast. The 6'5", 316-pound defensive tackle—emphasis on defensive tackle—officially ran 40-yard dashes of 5.15 and 5.19. But according to Matt Miller, one Seattle Seahawks scout clocked Brockers at 4.97. People that weigh 316 pounds shouldn't be able to run that fast. This is just further proof that SEC speed exists, and it's most prominent with the guys up front.
Cornerback Ron Brooks led all LSU players with a vertical jump of 38 inches. Not bad considering he's "the other LSU cornerback" in this draft.
Wide receiver Rueben Randle's mission was to improve his 40 time. Mission accomplished. Randle clocked 40 times of 4.43 and 4.42—more than one-tenth of a second faster than the time he clocked in Indianapolis. He was flirting with the first round before, and his performance on Thursday might seal the deal.
Jordan Jefferson improved his broad jump by one inch, but that shouldn't help his draft stock. He will likely go through the free-agent route to land on a team.
