WWE SmackDown: Preview of the March 23 Episode (SPOILERS Included)
Trying to avoid WWE spoilers is like attempting to start a diet: It's almost impossible to do.
Every time you go to a pro wrestling website, they're right there, just staring at you and waiting to be read. You do your best to prevent yourself from reading them, but you eventually give in.
Well, at least this is how I feel.
For a while, I avoided the Smackdown spoilers so that I could be more surprised when I watched the show on Friday nights, but I wound up reading them one day and have now made it a regular habit.
Knowing what's going to happen doesn't ruin my enjoyment of the show...as long as it looks like whatever is going down is gonna be good.
So, what does the blue brand have in store for us this week?
Here is a preview of tomorrow's episode of Friday Night Smackdown, with SPOILERS included.
Note: I'm basically going to give you guys the full SPOILER results, and then analyze three things I like about it and three things I don't like. Let's go!
The Full Spoilers
1 of 7Here are detailed spoilers from tomorrow's episode of Smackdown, courtesy of Prowrestling.net (via SEScoops.com):
Daniel Bryan and A.J. came out to start the show to a lot of boos. Bryan made A.J. tell everyone how much she loves him. It was hard to hear anything because he was being booed so loudly. A.J. added that Bryan is going to make Sheamus tap out at WrestleMania 28.
Shemaus interrupted and called Bryan a coward while saying his speech made him throw up in his mouth. Sheamus said he will kick Bryan’s teeth down his throat and added that he will be called a former World Hvt. Champion.
1. Mark Henry defeated R-Truth. Henry won with the World’s Strongest Slam in three minutes.
A video package revealed Yokozuna as the newest WWE Hall of Fame inductee.
Zack Ryder and The Great Khali were added to Teddy Long’s team at WrestleMania 28.
2. A.J. (w/Daniel Bryan) beat Brie Bella. A.J. received a pop because she’s from Union City, N.J., which is about ten minutes away from Newark. She got the win with a distraction by Bryan followed by a roll up for the pin. Afterward, Bryan entered the ring and celebrated more than A.J.
A No Way Out video package aired to hype the event that will be held in New Jersey.
3. Zack Ryder (w/Hornswoggle) beat Jack Swagger (w/Vickie Guerrero). Lilian Garcia mistakenly introduced Ryder as Swagger. Back and forth action, Ryder got a near fall, and so did Swagger. Ryder hit the Rough Ryder for the victory after Vickie and Hornswoggle argued on the apron in 3:49.
4. Big Show defeated Kane by DQ when Cody Rhodes interfered. Cody ran in and hit Big Show for the DQ. Show chased him into the crowd. Randy Orton snuck inside the ring and hit the RKO on Kane for a big pop. The match lasted a little over four minutes.
5. Brodus Clay beat Health Slater. Squash match. K Greene asks when we’ll get a real Clay match rather than a squash. Good question. Clay won in 1:25 and then entertained the crowd.
6. The Great Khali defeated Dolph Ziggler via countout in a restarted match. Christian came out to a pop and joined the announcers on commentary. John Laurinaitus rang bell and declared Ziggler winner by submission with no tap (Montreal screwjob style). Teddy restarted the match and counted out Ziggler, declaring Khali the winner. Kofi Kingston and Santino Marella pushed Ziggler back in and Khali chopped him.
7. CM Punk and Sheamus defeated Daniel Bryan and The Miz in the main event. Sheamus got the pin over Miz after a Brogue Kick.
Like: Giving Brodus Clay a Chance
2 of 7A couple of months ago, Brodus Clay got a nice push that saw him squash a different lower-card worker each week, but that push suddenly died out of nowhere.
Clay then returned on last week's Raw and did the same thing, but once again was left off this week's Raw. I guess that's OK, though, because he squashed Heath Slater at this week's Smackdown taping.
It seems like the WWE is pulling the trigger on Round 2 of Clay's push, and I'm a big fan of the decision.
While I don't see Clay's gimmick taking him to the main event, he got it over incredibly quickly, and the WWE really needs to build up as many new baby faces as possible because the roster so thin on that side.
Continuing to push Clay as a hilarious yet unstoppable character is a good start, and he could be a solid mid-carder if booked right. That being said, these squash matches are going to have to stop sooner or later, and Clay's going to need to get a legitimate feud.
Maybe after WrestleMania?
Dislike: Another Loss for Dolph Ziggler
3 of 7The circumstances surrounding Dolph Ziggler's loss to The Great Khali are pretty weird, but a loss is a still a loss, and a loss to Khali is a really bad one.
Although Ziggler got a win in tag team action on Monday's Raw, he's spent the better portion of the last couple of months losing to make others look better.
Ziggler lost to Sheamus on last week's Raw and will lose to Khali on this week's Smackdown, and it seems as if his incredible abilities to sell and work a good match with just about anyone are actually backfiring and causing him to be the one who puts others over.
You probably know that I'm a huge Ziggler fan, and I'm already disappointed that he's stuck in the Team Long vs. Team Laurinaitis match at WrestleMania. But the way he's been used lately is borderline ridiculous.
Stop turning Ziggler into The Miz, especially if it means he's gotta lose to Khali.
Like: A Victory and WrestleMania Spot for Zack Ryder
4 of 7Finally, some sweet vindication for Zack Ryder.
The WWE has done an excellent job completely killing all the momentum that Ryder built up in the second half of 2011, and this was never more evident than when he jobbed to Daniel Bryan on Monday's Raw.
But this week's Smackdown will at least be one step in the right direction for Ryder.
Though Lilian Garcia might still think he's Jack Swagger, Ryder will actually beat Swagger on this week's show and be named as a member of Team Long for the match at WrestleMania 28.
I still think the WWE would have been better off building toward a Ryder/Kane feud, but hey, Ryder's finally got a spot on the biggest pay-per-view of the year and his first win in what seems like forever.
Maybe he's going to get back on track after a really rough start to 2012.
Dislike: The Great Khali Added to Team Long at WrestleMania 28
5 of 7Here we go again.
Vince McMahon's obsession with The Great Khali strikes once again, as it will be revealed on tomorrow's show that Khali is the newest member of Team Long.
Why? Why? Why?
I don't care about what Khali's appeal in India might be. There is literally nothing else that he brings to the table. He can't wrestle, he can't sell, he doesn't have charisma and he isn't funny.
Yet he's going to be involved in a WrestleMania match when some deserving superstars will probably get left off the card altogether.
Team Long is quickly turning into a joke of a squad, with Khali, Santino Marella, R-Truth and Zack Ryder all working primarily as comedy characters but making up two-thirds of the team.
Ugh. Let's just say I'm not exactly excited about this match.
Like: A Promo Between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan
6 of 7Of the four "main event" WrestleMania feuds, Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan has undoubtedly had the worst build.
For example, on this Monday's Raw, both Sheamus and Bryan had matches. Yet Bryan simply beat Zack Ryder, and Sheamus simply beat The Miz.
There were no promos, no interference and no interaction whatsoever between the two. Thankfully, that will change on this week's Smackdown.
The Rock/Cena, HHH/Undertaker and Jericho/Punk feuds have been built up really well, primarily through promos, and Sheamus and Bryan are going to actually battle it out on the mic this week.
I get the idea of keeping Sheamus and Bryan apart so people will want to see them tear each other apart at WrestleMania, but we need a reason to want to see that happen.
We don't have one yet, but maybe we'll get one tomorrow night.
Dislike: Big Show vs. Kane...Again
7 of 7There was a reason that the match between Kane and The Big Show lasted less than a minute on Monday's Raw.
WWE officials knew that pairing up two huge, aging veterans wasn't going to result in a good match and, in all honesty, was probably going to be pretty terrible.
So my question is: Why have this match again on Smackdown?
While some people, for some godforsaken reason, will want to see Kane and Big Show wrestle, I think the majority of us can agree that—especially after seeing Mark Henry vs. Show about 20 times over the last several months—we're big man feuded out.
Even though this Kane/Show match is going to be used to further both of their WrestleMania feuds, there were tons of other ways to book this that didn't involve them actually wrestling.
Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10-20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring or Twitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
