WWE WrestleMania 28: Big Show vs. Cody Rhodes Is a Waste of a Match

Giulio RomanoJun 7, 2018

The intercontinental championship has been a WWE relic for over three decades and was chased by some of the most exceptional performers in history.

Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair and Randy Savage all brought a certain prestige to this title which helped launch so many onto the main-event scene. For years it has found its home on the grandest stage of them all.

Now, it is currently held by another worthy Superstar: Cody Rhodes. Though he has not defended it often, the "Dashing" One brings balance to the mid-card scene with his long reign and even went out of his way to bring back the old look of the belt which is a major plus and appeals to all who know the true value of the IC title.

When thinking about WrestleMania, one must think grandiose, spectacular, life-altering and career-making. Having to defend your prestigious championship against the Big Show is hardly any of those qualities.

The company's resident good giant is a nice guy and was once a great threat to all who faced him, but he is way out of his prime. It seems he was inserted in a feud with Cody for lack of creativity. He would have been just as comfortable helping out Teddy Long against John Laurinaitis.

Nobody wants to be mean here because Big Show is certainly loved by the people; however, Rhodes should have a more meaningful match at Mania. His title reign should not come to an end just yet. Though it is still unknown, the risk of taking the belt off him is present. That would be a huge mistake.

Goldust would have been a much more viable candidate and it had been a rumor for quite some time right up until Cody Rhodes started messing with his larger than life opponent.

First, they are brothers and the company teased some sort of angle between them earlier this year as Cody faced off against former World Champion, Booker T. The two are former tag partners and Goldie didn't approve of his younger sibling's methods and attitude.

Second, with all this personal stuff and their father being a Hall of Famer ("American Dream" Dusty Rhodes) it would have brought all sorts of energy to this feud. It could even have been a "Title vs. Career" match. That really would have brought some style and class to everyone involved AND the championship itself.

Like the days of old actually.

Now the WWE Universe is handed something just thrown in together at the last minute just so two high-end performers have something to do. It also shouldn't be of big enough importance to take some spotlight out of their precious John Cena/The Rock main event.

News flash WWE: your big match of the decade is the third most important of the night. Millions would rather watch The Undertaker take it to Triple H or CM Punk defend his WWE championship against Chris Jericho.

Plain and simple, Big Show vs. Cody Rhodes is a total waste of time. It probably won't even end in a clean pinfall for the villain and the last thing anyone needs to see is the Giant becoming another transitional champion.

A surprise could still happen though. Rhodes could beat Big Show cleanly and establish himself even more, which would be a refreshing change for "heels" who are often made to appear as cowards.

Maybe this match is meant for Show to win the IC title and place him among the ranks of Grand Slam winners. That belt is the only thing missing on his resume and if he gets there, maybe he can retire shortly after.

Come to think of it, there are a few serious implications in this match, but not enough to garner more attention than it already has.

Like it or not, it is going to happen and fans can only hope it delivers somehow. The Intercontinental championship deserves to be made a serious thing from now on.

My vote goes with Cody retaining.
