Oklahoma City Thunder: 5 Things Derek Fisher Would Bring to Young Squad
It didn't take Derek Fisher long to find a new home.
After being bought out by the Houston Rockets, NBA.com is reporting that Fisher is in Oklahoma City finalizing a contract that will make him a member of the Thunder and their push to reach the NBA Finals.
If and when a deal gets done, it's a smart move for the Thunder to add a veteran point guard to play behind Russell Westbrook.
Once Fisher joins his new squad, he will bring a lot to a young Oklahoma City team.
Here's a look at just a few of the positives that Fisher brings.
Character
They don't make them much classier than Fisher.
He's always been a stand-up guy, both on and off the court. It can only help the Thunder to add a character guy like Fisher. He will know his role on this team and will perform it in a classy manner.
Leadership
Fisher knows what it takes to win. The Thunder are trying to find out what it takes. It's a perfect match.
There are many ways to lead, and Fisher can become a leader on the Thunder without having to play a major role on the court. He's a guy that some of the young Oklahoma City players should be seeking out for advice.
Experience
As good as the Thunder are as a team, it's easy to overlook how young they are and how little postseason experience they have as a unit.
That's definitely not the case with Fisher. He's seen it all and done it all throughout his 16-year NBA career.
His postseason experience alone should be a positive lift for the Thunder. Fisher's 209 postseason games played ranks him fourth all time. You want a guy with that pedigree in the locker room with a young team preparing to make a run.
Locker Room Presence
Speaking of the locker room, that could be the biggest area in which Fisher could help the Thunder this summer. Adding a veteran to the mix with the reputation of being a good locker-room guy will pay dividends in the postseason.
He will lead by example, and guys like Westbrook would be wise to follow his lead.
Clutch Factor
Say what you want about the year Fisher is having; he's still a guy that's been know to knock down big shots in tight moments during the postseason.
You can't have too many guys like that on a team, and it wouldn't surprise me if Fisher has just a little bit of magic left in him for one more postseason run.
