WWE Weekly 5: Wrestlers Who Would Make Great Commentators
WWE and WCW both made a great effort to utilize former wrestlers as commentators, and they usually end up being the best people for the job.
Guys like Jerry Lawler, JBL, Bobby Heenan, Larry Zbyszko and many others have proven that they were just as good with a headset and table as they were with spandex and a ring.
Today's wrestling world is filled with men and women who are just as talented on the mic as they are in the rin;, some are even more talented on the mic.
We have seen more proof of the fact that wrestlers make great commentators by watching what a great job William Regal has been doing and what a fun time it was when CM Punk was filling in on commentary while injured.
Today's WWE roster has plenty of people who could easily move to a position behind the announce table after they are ready top hand up their boots.
Sunday I wrote an article about how William Regal needed to be on one of the main WWE shows as a commentator. The comments from everyone were so positive in favor of Regal that I figured it would be a good idea to explore some more possibilities for announcers.
In this week's WWE Weekly 5, I will examine the top five current wrestlers who I feel could make great commentators in the future.
Phil "CM Punk" Brooks
1 of 5As I already mentioned in the opening slide, CM Punk has shown that his silver tongue works just as well on commentary as it does in promos.
Punk's time on Raw back when he was nursing an injury provided for a breath of fresh air at the WWE announce table and he could make a good living doing it full time after he retires from the ring, if he so chooses.
His knowledge of the sport, quick wit and natural charisma would allow Punk to be one of the best wrestlers-turned-commentators of all time.
Right now I think Bobby Heenan is the best cross-over talent to get behind the table, but Punk has the potential to be right up there with him down the line.
Heenan was known more for his managing and announcing, but he did spend time in a singlet which makes him the best wrestler-turned-commentator I have ever seen.
John Cena
2 of 5Say what you will about his repetitive promos and small move-set, this guy is a beast on the mic. He would not be constantly presenting awards and appearing on talk shows if he was not comfortable speaking to a crowd.
Whenever Cena sits in on commentary, I always enjoy it because he is naturally comfortable speaking to a huge audience around the world.
Like Punk, Cena has a great sense of humor, passion for the sport and knowledge of the history behind it to be a truly great commentator if he ever decides to go that route.
I think Cena could be another Jesse Ventura: someone who was known as being one of the most built guys around who went to become one of the most entertaining commentators around.
I do not see this being as much of a possibility as Punk becoming an announcer simply because Cena has star-power outside the wrestling world which would certainly kick open a lot of doors for him if he ever had to give up wrestling.
Cena still has a long time left in his career, as long as he stays healthy and does not get an injury he cannot come back from.
Chris Jericho
3 of 5As one of WWE's most established veterans, Chris Jericho has proven he is one of the best in every aspect of the wrestling business.
Whether it is in-ring competition, promo ability, the ability to reinvent himself or his overall charisma, it is hard to deny that Jericho is someone who is hard to top.
His current character is a slow-talking, serious individual who is upset that Punk and everyone else in the WWE has been copying his gimmicks.
His real-life personality is outgoing and hilarious. Jericho is one of the best in the world when it comes to delivering a promo and this skill could easily translate to behind the announce table.
Jericho has sat on commentary for single matches in the past and he has done a good job of keeping his character in check, but if he was just being himself on the headset, I think he could be among the greatest.
Jericho has plenty of things to keep him busy outside the ring, but if he wants to stay in the business after he is unable to keep wrestling at such a high level, then we could see him make this transition.
Big Show
4 of 5Another of WWE's more comfortable talents on the mic is Big Show.
Ever since he first showed up in WCW to throw Andre's shirt at Hogan he has elevated himself year after year.
He is arguably the best giant in the history of the business in terms of raw talent, and he is always getting better.
When he returned to WWE in 2007 he had lost a bunch of weight in preparation for a career in boxing which never took off.
During his time off, it seems that Show also discovered that he didn't have to pretend to be someone else to play a character.
By basically being himself in his promos, he has become one of WWE's more solid mic workers in recent years. Whenever Show is on commentary during a match, it is usually entertaining.
There is no way a man of his size will be able to wrestle as long as someone like Jerry Lawler, so moving to a position next to Lawler at the announce table could be a good move.
Big Show is someone who I feel does not get the credit he deserves; he is generally never pushed as the biggest star in the company because someone like Hogan, Cena, Austin or Rock is always there, too.
Sheamus
5 of 5The Irish-born superstar is someone who many may not have expected to make this list, but there is good reason.
Sheamus is one of WWE's hottest commodities ever since he won the Royal Rumble, but one thing I have always thought he was above average at was speaking on the mic.
His Irish accent does nothing to take away from the charisma he has, and his time outside of WWE has also shown he can be humorous.
He has been featured on a show called Dustin the Turkey, where he had a feud with a puppet, and his time on the show featured some of his comedy chops.
He has shown that he can be both a fan favorite as well as a despised heel, which means he could be just as versatile on the mic.
Sheamus is bound for great things, but being an announcer could be an avenue he chooses to take if he ever retires from the ring but still wishes to be involved in the business.
Thanks for reading, and feel free to share your thoughts on who would make a good commentator in the comments section below.
