2012 NFL Free Agents: QB Matt Flynn Best Suited for Joe Philbin's Miami Dolphins

Patrick ClarkeJun 7, 2018

Free agent quarterback Matt Flynn's top destination this offseason is with former offensive coordinator Joe Philbin and the Miami Dolphins.

Veteran quarterback Peyton Manning has made it known that he will not sign with Miami, so the Dolphins still desperately need a capable quarterback. They reportedly have the inside track to land the former Green Bay Packer, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter.

Philbin coached Flynn into a superb backup signal-caller with the Packers and was responsible for turning Aaron Rodgers into an MVP passer, so there is no telling how successful the duo could be in South Beach. Flynn will turn 27 this June, so his best years are clearly ahead of him.

Flynn has just two starts in his four-year career, but has played in 34 games, completing 62 percent of his passes for more than 1,000 yards, nine touchdowns and only five interceptions during that time.

Flynn set a Green Bay record in Week 17 against the Detroit Lions last season, throwing for 480 yards and six touchdowns. It was that late-season audition that put Flynn's name on the free-agent map and will ultimately make him a wealthy man in Miami.

The Dolphins were 6-10 last season and ranked 23rd in the NFL in passing yards per game, averaging less than 194 yards per game through the air. Without question, an accurate pocket passer like Flynn in a familiar, Philbin-led offensive scheme would drastically improve those numbers.

With wide receiver Brandon Marshall already traded to the Chicago Bears for draft picks, there is little threat of a huddle or locker room problem being created by the exodus of Matt Moore (who played well late last season with Miami) as the starter.

Moore's 174.5 passing yards per game and 16 touchdowns in 13 games last season was game-manager-like, but will not be the recipe for future success in the AFC East for the Dolphins.

Flynn has looked poised filling in for Rodgers over the past few years. He has looked confident, relaxed and in complete control of the offense. A lot of that has to be credited to Philbin, and that's why signing with the Dolphins this offseason is a no-brainer for Flynn. The Dolphins would surely approve.
