NBA Trade Rumors: Further Moves That Must Be Made by Deadline Dealing Teams
The 2012 NBA trading deadline was quite an exciting and busy time for a number of franchises. Ten deals went down, and a few of those are expected to alter the outcome of the upcoming postseason and possibly the future of certain teams.
Not every squad got exactly the player they need at this time, or maybe made a move towards something larger, so let’s take a look at who still has work to do.
New Jersey Nets
The Nets made another questionable deadline deal in 2012. Last year they brought in Deron Williams, and this season they traded a surefire lottery pick for Gerald Wallace.
It wouldn’t be such a bad deal if Wallace weren’t eligible to become a free agent in the summer, just like D-Will.
Perhaps NJ thinks they will be able to work out an offseason deal with the Magic to send Gerald and some other pieces in exchange for Dwight Howard, who signed an opt-in deal for next season.
It was a huge gamble, and it may not pay off for the Nets.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs flipped Richard Jefferson, T.J. Ford and a first-rounder to the Warriors for Stephen Jackson (who was moved from Milwaukee the previous day).
This deal works for San Antonio because Kawhi Leonard has earned the starting SF job and Jackson will be great off the bench backing up either swing position.
However, they’ll need to sign a player now that they freed up a roster spot by including two players in return for one.
There isn’t much available in the free-agent pile, but if anyone could find a contributor to a postseason run it would be San Antonio.
Orlando Magic
The Magic didn’t make a deal per se, but they managed to convince Howard to stay in Orlando until at least the 2012-13 season.
This gives them time to make major moves.
They need to bring in some elite talent to their roster over the summer or find a place to trade the big man and return some valuable assets to compete with.
Either way, the Magic have a long offseason coming up.
