Wrestlemania 28: Marking Out: Is a Screwjob Coming to Miami?

Ryan SzJun 7, 2018

Welcome again to Marking Out. This week's edition is proving to be quite interesting for this writer. After watching the latest episode of Raw and reading about some of the things going on with Wrestlemania XXVIII, it appears to me that the WWE may be trying to reach deep down into its old bag of tricks and serve the fans up with something that may blow up in the WWE's face.

That trick would unfortunately be a screwjob.

With recent reports of plans for the Miz to interfere in the match between The Rock and John Cena, the obvious reason being that the Miz is going to be given a push in return for his recent losing streak and have him again feud with Cena.

This is the worst idea that the WWE could do for this match. After well over a year of building up this match between the two top stars, to muddle up the match by having a third party interfere would take away from the importance of this match.

If the Miz interferes on behalf of The Rock, it only works in making The Rock look weak and a lesser superstar in comparison to Cena (which certainly isn't true). The only reason I see this happening is if The Rock really begins to draw a lot more heat backstage than he already is, otherwise it's a senseless waste of buildup for a huge match.

The other match where it seems that a screwjob could occur was during the Hell in a Cell match between The Undertaker and Triple H. The obvious screwjob would come from the special referee for the match, Shawn Michaels.

The saving grace here is that the WWE is really driving the idea that Shawn would be biased against the Undertaker, and side with his DX partner Triple H. With the kind of push they are giving the idea that Shawn would cost The Undertaker the match, I think it would be too obvious for him to do so.

If anything, I expect Shawn to turn on Triple H and cost him the match, thus keeping The Streak alive.

That swerve could play out in a number of ways—it could be that Michaels turns on his friend because he doesn't want Triple H to succeed where he failed, ultimately costing him his career. Another angle is that Michaels was brought in by the board of directors to keep Triple H in line, since he hasn't been doing his job as COO of the company.

Either would be a good way for Triple H to leave his wrestling position and become more of an on-screen authority figure.

Whatever happens, don't be surprised if interference of any kind occurs during these matches—which is unfortunate, since fans would love to see clean finishes. Either way, fans will tune in in droves and both matches should have some very appealing action for the fans.
