NBA Rumors: Magic Must Pull Trigger on Deal If Dwight Howard Doesn't Committ
You put right foot in
You take your right foot out
We all know the song. If by some chance you didn't know the words to the hokey pokey, Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard is teaching you.
Apparently, Dwight Howard has informed friends, Magic management and random people on the street that he will not opt out and become a free agent this summer.
Alex Kennedy of Hoopsworld.com tweeted:
What?
You put your right foot in and you shake it all about
The Magic cannot allow themselves to be "turned all around." They must set a strict deadline for the all-world big man. If he has not submitted the proper paperwork to prove he isn't opting out, he must be traded.
At this point, the Magic must find suitors that are willing to rent him, then evaluate which team has the best offer.
It's just that simple.
This will force Howard to do something he has been reluctant to do throughout this process, and that is commit.
Either submit the paperwork or be sent to play in a city you're not happy with.
Dwight is in control this summer, as he should be, but the Magic are in control now.
I understand the fuss—players that average 21 points and 15 rebounds don't come along often. Throw in four rebounding titles, three consecutive Defensive Player of the Year awards, and it becomes even more clear why the Magic are waiting for him.
Still, at some point the team has to be selfish, as does the player.
I'm always pro-player in these situations, but I fully expect the Magic to do what is best for them. If Dwight is noncommittal, the Magic must be decisive.
In the end, it will be best for both parties.
Orlando will get something for Howard and be allowed to move into the next era of its franchise.
For Dwight, it'll finally be over. No more speculation for the remainder of the season. He'll be able to opt out and sign in Brooklyn, or wherever he chooses.
It's the way it should be.
