Lakers Trade Rumors: Power-Ranking Potential Point Guard Replacements for L.A.

Tim KeeneyMay 31, 2018

If the Los Angeles Lakers are going to make a title run this year, they need to get a point guard before the NBA trade deadline.

Derek Fisher and Steve Blake just aren't getting done, putting the Lakers on the market for a point guard for a while now.

As Alex Kennedy of Hoops World points out, the Lakers have been linked to point guards such as Kyle Lowry, Ramon Sessions, Kirk Hinrich and Raymond Felton, among many others.

But who's the best option?

Not going to happen

Among those on the Lakers' wish list, it's very unlikely they'll get Rajon Rondo (don't think the Celtics give him up), Kyle Lowry (too expensive), Deron Williams (he's going to stay in New Jersey and wait for Dwight, in my opinion) and Jose Calderon (Raptors are sitting out trade deadline).

3. Kirk Hinrich, Atlanta Hawks

Hinrich is certainly the cheapest candidate available, but he's also the worst.

The veteran point guard is known mostly for his three-point shooting, but he's hitting at just a 33 percent clip this year. Hinrich distributes the ball and plays defense pretty well, but at this point, there's no major quality separating him from Steve Blake.

This just isn't the type of move that would make the Lakers considerably better, no matter how cheap it would come.

2. Raymond Felton, Portland Trail Blazers

Felton was beginning to break out as an elite point guard last year with the Knicks, but he just hasn't been the same since leaving Mike D'Antoni's pick-and-roll offense.

Still, he's a major upgrade over Fisher and Blake and represents a buy-low option for Los Angeles. He can knock down the open three, but he's also a great play-maker and passer.

What's more, Felton is showing signs of life.

In this case, it would certainly depend on the price.

1. Ramon Sessions, Cleveland Cavaliers

When given the opportunity, Sessions produces in bunches.

In his career as a starter, Sessions has averaged 14.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 7.4 assists. He can knock down the jumper with consistency, create his shot off the dribble, and most importantly, run an offense efficiently (just 2.5 turnovers per game during those starts).

Sessions is No. 1 on L.A.'s wish list for point guards, and rightfully so.

Sessions is itching for an opportunity to prove himself now that Kyrie Irving is the future in Cleveland, and he would get that and more with the Lakers.

It's not just a half-season risk, either, as Sessions is under contract through 2013.

This looks like a win-win for both parties.
