Why Brandon Marshall Incident Proves Dolphins Fleeced Bears in Trade

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

The Miami Dolphins shipped perpetually troubled receiver Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears on Tuesday in exchange for two third-round picks. Many initially thought it was strange that the Dolphins would get rid of a Pro Bowl wide receiver for two mid-round draft picks, but now we may have an explanation.

Today the New York Post reports that Marshall is accused of "slugging" a woman outside of a New York City nightclub on Sunday. The 27-year-old Marshall was in the process of being thrown out of the club because he was in a fight with another unknown athlete when the incident occurred. He allegedly "cold-cocked" 24-year-old Christin Myles who was celebrating her birthday.

The woman suffered a left black eye after Marshall hit her. It apparently isn't clear if Marshall meant to hit her or one of the friends she was with.

This incident came less than a year after Marshall was allegedly stabbed by his wife. Marshall was also involved in a fight on New Year's Eve in 2006 that led to the drive-by shooting death of Denver Broncos teammate Darrent Williams.

Marshall may never figure things out off the field and the Dolphins clearly had enough of his personality. The 27-year-old is a three-time Pro Bowler, but I'm not sure he is worth the two third-rounders the Bears surrendered to get him. I'm also not certain he's worth the $9 million a year he is owed over the next few seasons.

Miami apparently had been maneuvering to deal Marshall for weeks before they actually unloaded him on the Bears. Chicago general manager Phil Emery claims both teams were aware of the receiver's latest "incident," and the Bears took that risk anyway. In the end, the Dolphins may come out of this deal as the better team, since Marshall is simply an unreliable guy.
