2012 NFL Free Agent Predictions: Peyton Manning and Studs Who Won't Sign Quickly

Adam WellsMay 31, 2018

When free agency starts in the NFL, not all of the top names available need to be in a rush to find their next home.

It is a common practice to sign right away in order to learn a new playbook and get the hassle of being on the open market out of the way.

But for some studs, there is the allure of the unknown. Being out there and causing a bidding war between teams can be an attractive option.

Here are our predictions for free agents who won't be in a hurry to sign new contracts.

Peyton Manning, Quarterback

Being a free agent for the first time in his 14-year career could be the breath of fresh air that Manning needs to rejuvenate himself. Finding a new team could make him feel reborn in some respects.

Why would he want to rush himself through the free-agent process without looking at every possible option to see which team wants him the most and will present him the best chance to win?

Manning already has his share of suitors, though there is no indication that he is ready to sign right now. He shouldn't be in a rush to sign. He will have plenty of time to get acclimated with his new teammates, but only one chance to make the right decision.

Mike Wallace, Wide Receiver

If another team wants to get Wallace away from Pittsburgh, they will have to give him a lot of money and a first-round draft pick since he is a restricted free agent. That would actually be a small price to pay for arguably the best big-play receiver in the NFL.

It also helps that he doesn't turn 26 until August. He is just now entering the prime of his career, so he could get better over the next two or three seasons.

All of the top unrestricted wide receivers are off the market, so teams will have to assess whether or not they want to give up a little something extra for Wallace. It will take time before we get an answer, but the answer should be a resounding yes.

Benjarvus Green-Ellis, Running Back

Green-Ellis is one of the most reliable running backs in the NFL. He runs hard, plays every game and, most importantly, does not put the ball on the ground. In 536 career touches, he has never fumbled the ball.

There are plenty of teams that need to upgrade the running back position, and the New England Patriots would like to keep him, so Green-Ellis should milk this for all that he can to ensure he gets the best deal.

Since teams don't value running backs like they once did, it might take Green-Ellis awhile to get the contract he wants with the franchise he wants. Why not ride that out as long as possible?
