5 Reasons Ian McCall Will Defeat Demetrious Johnson in Their Rematch
Think back to the last UFC event on March 3. It had Joseph Benavidez knock out Yasuhiro Urushitani. It had Martin Kampmann submit Thiago Alves and it had the Ian McCall and Demetrious Johnson fight get called a majority decision.
Then, it was later announced that it was actually a majority draw, which would force McCall and Johnson to have a rematch later in 2012.
It was a very close fight, and had there been a fourth round, Ian McCall probably would have earned the victory, as he had all the momentum on his side.
Here are five reasons why McCall will defeat Johnson in their rematch.
Knows What to Expect from the UFC
1 of 5Prior to fighting in the UFC, Ian McCall was fighting in Tachi Palace Fights, which isn't the same level of publicity as the UFC.
Now that he has had his first fight in the Octagon, he'll know what dealing with the media is like, what the huge crowds are like and everything else that comes with being a UFC fighter.
It sure didn't look like this was an issue for McCall at all in the fight, but you never know what could be going on in a fighter's head.
Won't Showboat for the Crowd
2 of 5In the third round of the fight, McCall achieved back mount on Johnson, and instead of teeing off and looking to finish the fight, McCall showboated and played to the crowd, while mixing in strikes.
Had he simply looked to finish, he would have had a good chance of victory.
In the rematch, should he achieve such a position—or any dominant position—he won't be showboating. He'll be looking to finish.
Won't Assume He's Winning the Fight
3 of 5This slide goes hand-in-hand with the "not showboating" slide, but this was part of the reason that he showboated towards the end of the fight.
Going into the third round, he believed he was winning the fight and that the third round was simply putting the exclamation point on the fight.
Knows He Has a Significant Ground Advantage
4 of 5In the third round, McCall had the back of Johnson, had full mount on Johnson and had a significant grappling advantage over Johnson.
Johnson was able to get up and scramble several times throughout the fight, but McCall was able to avoid all of Johnson's takedowns and was able to get Johnson down multiple times.
McCall will likely look to exploit that advantage in the rematch.
Knows How Fast Johnson Will Be
5 of 5One huge factor for McCall is that he has now seen how fast Demetrious Johnson really is, and he can be prepared for it.
There are several things that simply can't be emulated in sparring, such as reach or speed.
Having seen Johnson in action, McCall will know exactly how fast he'll be and what he'll have to deal with in the rematch.
