Printable NCAA Tournament 2012 Bracket: Overhyped Teams You Must Avoid Picking

Tim DanielsMar 12, 2012

Every season there are a couple teams that start to pick up momentum right after the brackets are released. They are deemed sleepers, but the problem with that label is everybody starts jumping on the bandwagon so it doesn't really make sense anymore.

Here are three squads that have been overhyped, and therefore should not be advanced more than one round in your bracket.

Connecticut

Connecticut is a perfect example of a team living off last season's results. Everybody remembers the remarkable run Kemba Walker and his Huskies teammates made last March, but there's no correlation between that team and how far they will go this time around.

Outside of Jeremy Lamb, UConn doesn't have enough reliable scoring threats to think another magical run is possible. Shabazz Napier is a streaky shooter, and if he has an off-game the Huskies will be out in a heartbeat.

I fully expect Iowa State to eliminate Connecticut. Even if the Huskies survive that game, however, they aren't getting past Kentucky.

Memphis

As soon as Memphis was coupled with Michigan State atop the West Region, the words "Final Four" started to be thrown around. That's a bit overboard. The Tigers only faced three ranked teams all season and lost each time.

Will Barton is a terrific lead guard and you can't deny Memphis' athleticism, but the team's offensive efficiency doesn't scream elite to me. Add in the fact their first-round opponent, Saint Louis, isn't going to be an easy win and the Tigers become a risky pick.

The Spartans aren't a weak top seed like they're being painted as, so anybody who advances Memphis to the Sweet 16 or beyond will do so at their own peril.

Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt is a solid team. In fact, I even picked the Commodores to win the SEC tournament last week. That said, they have become a trendy Final Four pick, and when push comes to shove, they really aren't that good.

John Jenkins and Jeffery Taylor give them the inside-outside combination you always look for, but Vanderbilt has two problems that will cause issues. First, turnovers. Secondly, the defense has struggled against ranked opponents.

Their first game is in the dreaded No. 5 vs. 12 seed matchup against underrated Harvard. That would be followed, most likely, by a clash with Wisconsin. In other words, Vandy won't make the second weekend.
