Manchester United vs. Wolves: Player Ratings in Red Devils' Shocking 5-0 Win
Did anyone really expect Manchester United not to run away with this one?
The Red Devils looked a little shaky in the first few minutes with Wolves keeping possession nicely in the midfield. But a score from Jonathan Evans—his first of the season in league play—put visiting Manchester United ahead 1-0.
Then things got truly out of hand. Wolverhampton defender Ronald Zubar received two bookings in the span of 11 minutes and before the halftime whistle sounded the hosts were down to just 10 men.
Antonio Valencia was the first to take advantage with an easy score in the 43rd minute and then Danny Welbeck made it 3-0 just before the clubs took their halftime break.
The second half was much of the same as an already dominant Red Devils squad took full advantage of having an extra man on the pitch.
Javier Hernandez scored two goals in the 56th and 61st minute, respectively, after losing himself in the crowd, going unmarked and receiving passes from Valencia and Welbeck.
Heck, fans at Molineux Stadium were chanting "Boring!" by the 72nd minute!
Manchester United was firing on all cylinders collectively, ending the game with a 5-0 win, but how did the individual players grade out? Check out how all the players rated, and let me know if you agree!
Goalkeeper
1 of 4David De Gea: 7.0
Earned his seventh clean sheet of the season thanks to great defensive play by centre-backs Jonathan Evans and Rio Ferdinand.
Had very little to do thanks to Wolverhampton's short temper and the sending off of defender Ronald Zubar in the 39th minute as the hosts only got off three shots on goal.
Did fine work in the first bit of the first half, putting away Wolves' few, pitiful efforts when they still fielded an 11-man squad.
Defenders
2 of 4Patrice Evra: 7.5
Strong play on the left flank. Like many of United's players, had very little to do and was able to pace himself well for most of the match. Was nearly invisible in the first half, but not in a way that demonstrated poor form. Just not much in the way of attacking from Wolves.
Rio Ferdinand: 7.0
Wolves forward Steven Fletcher got the better of him in the 18th minute, even if it was called offside in the end. After the Red Devils started pouring on the goals, Ferdinand was hardly bothered at all.
Jonathan Evans: 8.0
Had an excellent first half, scoring his first goal of the season from a beautiful pass by the unselfish Michael Carrick. His cross to Valencia set up Danny Welbeck's goal in the 45th minute.
Rafael: 7.0
Had clumsy challenges in the first half that nearly led to some bookings. Played well along the right flank, but stayed back on his side of the pitch more often than going forward. Great job in finding an unmarked Chicharito for the Mexican's first score early in the second half.
Fabio: 7.0
Gave Evra a spell in the 63rd minute and played well enough to keep the three points for Manchester United—as though they needed it!
Chris Smalling: 7.0
Came in for wonderful Evans in the 75th minute. With the game well out of hand and Wolves down to 10 men, there wasn't anything Smalling could do to ruin the night the Red Devils.
Midfielders
3 of 4Danny Welbeck: 8.0
Gifted by Wolverhampton defender Ronald Zubar's sending off in the middle of the first half. Was patient with his score to end the first half, taking a brilliant Valencia pass and easily putting it in the back of the net. Played the counter-attack well with Valencia and got several good assists in on the night.
Michael Carrick: 7.5
Again, a necessary—and underrated—part of the Red Devils earning three points tonight. His assist on Jonathan Evans' opening goal of the match was as pinpoint as it was unselfish. Was all over the pitch, helping whoever needed it.
Paul Scholes: 7.0
Stayed in the center of the midfield, firing off incredible passes in the beginning of the match and then disappearing into a caretaker role as the game got well out of hand for the hosts Wolverhampton. The least impressive of the midfielders, but that says less about Scholes and more about the fine display the rest of the squad put on.
Antonio Valencia: 8.5
Both he and Welbeck took full advantage of a Wolves side that fielded only 10 men for most of the match. Turned a difficult shot into a beautiful goal in the 43rd minute.
Covered the right flank well, but most of the credit will go towards Zubar's leaving the pitch rather than Valencia playing well. But hey, goals are goals, right? His finding of an unmarked Chicharito in the 61st minute was a thing of beauty.
Paul Pogba: 7.0
Gave the 30-year-old Carrick a rest in the 57th minute when the match was well out of hand.
Forwards
4 of 4Wayne Rooney: 8.0
What a corner in the 21st minute to get the scoring going. Linked up well with Hernandez, feeding the young Mexican international pinpoint crosses all day.
His assisting of Valencia's goal to end the first half was trademark Rooney—slotting the ball through a very tight window in a hectic Wolves penalty area.
Fouled at the beginning of the second half, but it looked as though the referees were taking pity on the poor hosts. Will be underrated by many, but his crosses and leadership were vital tonight.
Javier Hernandez: 8.5
If not for an offside call early in the match, Hernandez would have made the score 2-0 in the 32nd minute if he’d been a few feet back.
Worked hard to lose himself in the crowd during a corner in the 56th minute, was completely unmarked, received the ball and easily scored. Followed it up with another goal—again, unmarked by Wolves' woeful defense—for his first two-goal game since a September 10 match against Bolton.
