Power Ranking the Sixers' Most Charismatic Players
No one on the Philadelphia 76ers is a big enough star to have a "Q Score"—the widely-used measurement of the consumer appeal of a particular brand, company or individual. Even so, the team is a mix of talented, young, charismatic players who have endeared themselves to the city of Philadelphia.
From Wilt Chamberlain to Charles Barkley to Allen Iverson, the 76ers' franchise has often had at least one magnetic personality that resonated with the fans. This year's group lacks that star power, but there are a few individuals who are more engaging than the rest.
With that said, let's take a look at some of the more notable personalities on the current roster. And for the purposes of this piece, we'll limit the discussion to the players themselves: the 76ers are one of those rare franchises where their head coach (Doug Collins) is far and away the most charismatic person associated with the team.
5) Andre Iguodala
1 of 5Short of leading the 76ers to an NBA championship, Andre Iguodala will never be fully appreciated by the city of Philadelphia.
That's not to say that no one likes him. But the cheers of those who do are drowned out by the chorus of 76ers' fans who refuse to embrace the team's 6'6" swingman.
For years, the biggest knock on Iguodala was that he didn't appear to be trying exceptionally hard while out on the court. It was, and continues to be, an unfair assumption.
But that assumption is the proverbial albatross that Iguodala has worn his entire career, and there's little that he can do to shake it off.
4) Elton Brand
2 of 5As both the team's co-captain and elder statesman, Elton Brand is the steadying influence in a locker room full of relatively young players.
Off of the court, Brand is extremely active in the community, very engaging with the fans and the best interview on the team.
In 2006, Brand received the NBA's Sportsmanship Award—an honor bestowed upon the player who best "exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court—ethical behavior, fair play and integrity."
Those characteristics are why Sixers fans have recently warmed up to Brand, despite his less-than-ideal contract and declining play.
3) Jrue Holiday
3 of 5It's hard not to take a liking to Jrue Holiday: an affable 21-year-old who is one of the league's rising young stars.
His quiet demeanor is a welcome departure from the brash attitude of some of the other NBA players whose antics are often celebrated on the nightly highlight shows.
As they suffer through Holiday's growing pains on the court, 76ers' fans appreciate the fact that the 6'4" point guard is making every effort to become a better player.
As Collins nurtures Holiday ever closer to his full potential—and as the young playmaker matures—he'll slowly begin to define his role on both the team and in the community.
2) Evan Turner
4 of 5Two weeks ago, Evan Turner would have been ranked quite a bit lower on the list.
But since he was inserted into the starting lineup on March 5, Turner has become a bit more relaxed both on and off of the court.
That comfort level has revealed a side of Turner that few 76ers fans had ever seen, and so far, the city has quickly adopted the second-year swingman as one of its own.
The sample size is far too small to make a definitive judgment, but Turner is quickly establishing himself as Philadelphia's best player.
As the team's closest approximation to a star (apologies to Andre Iguodala), Turner's talent is the X-Factor that gives him a decided leg up on his teammates.
1) Lou Williams
5 of 5Since this is election season, if there were a vote as to who is the most charismatic member of the Sixers, Lou Williams would win in a landslide.
Philadelphia is a city that loves the underdog, and the undersized Williams definitely fits the bill. But what 76ers fans love most about the 6'1" scoring guard is his heart: Williams is willing to take any shot at any time, and that never-say-die approach will endear him to Sixers fans for years to come.
Even those who aren't fans of Williams' game—the ill-advised 25-footers, the inconsistent defense—rarely utter a cross word about him away from the court.
There are also those in Philadelphia who admire Williams for another reason altogether. In addition to his day job, Williams has a number of ties to the city's music scene, and is probably the most talented NBA player who dabbles in the hip-hop arena.
