NBA Trade Deadline: A Move the Sacramento Kings Must Make with Washington
With six days until the NBA trade deadline, the Sacramento Kings have many areas they could stand to improve in, but the biggest one remains the team's gaping hole at small forward.
If general manager Geoff Petrie is serious about finding help at the position, he might want to give the Washington Wizards a call.
According to Michael Lee of the Washington Post, the Wizards will trade anyone on their squad if their trading partner agrees to take back the contract of forward Andray Blatche. From Lee's twitter feed
"Source just told me #wizards have informed teams they can have any player except John Wall if they are willing to take Andray Blatche.
"
Blatche isn't an addition the Kings should be eager to acquire, as he is owed over $30 million over the next four seasons. He's a headache inducing player and doesn't really fill any needs the Kings have. He's currently averaging 9.8 points and 6.8 rebounds but is shooting just 37.7 percent from the floor and has been bothered by the boos he's been getting from Wizards fans.
But if Washington is serious about trading any player to get rid of Blatche, Geoff should absolutely take the Wizards up on that offer.
The Wizards selected Jan Vesley, a small forward from Czechoslovakia with the sixth overall pick in the 2011 draft. Vesley isn't seeing a ton of playing time, getting just 15 minutes a contest and averaging 3.0 points and 3.2 rebounds. But Vesley's potential is very high, and he could very well be worth the risk of taking on Blatche's contract.
Vesley is an exceptionally athletic player and was known as a very solid defender coming over from Partizan Belgrade—his international team from last season. He'd need to improve his perimeter game and gain a consistent jump shot, but his athleticism and defensive potential would make him a great fit for the Kings future.
The Kings should call up the Wizards and see if they can swap JJ Hickson and John Salmons to Washington for Blatche, Vesley and fellow Wizards' rookie Chris Singleton. The Wizards would get Hickson to replace Blatche, and while Salmons' is also overpaid, he's only owed $24 million over the next three seasons. Washington saves money and the Kings get a small forward.
Taking on Blatche wouldn't be the best thing in the world for the Kings locker room, but current Head Coach Keith Smart has been able to properly motivate DeMarcus Cousins, so perhaps he could turn Blatche around as well. If he can't, the Kings could easily use their amnesty clause on Blatche this coming offseason.
It's be a risk for Sacramento, but Vesley wasn't a top six selection for nothing, and if he reaches his potential, he could be an exceptional fit for the Kings.
